Yes even with a 144hz, it is better at nothing because Intel raised up the core count on this generation and whatever you may think of there is no rocket science, 6 cores (i5 8600k) is higher and better than 4 cores (i7 7700k).

thats not how it works at all, especially since most games don't even use more than 4 cores

i'd say you're better off with the 7700k (or i7 8700k since they are about the same price but 8700k is better); the 8600k has a lower clock speed and most games won't end up using more than 4 cores anyway, so clock speed > core for gaming cpu; games rely more on gpu but cpu wise 4 cores and high clock speeds are what matter which is why 7700k is a best seller cpu despite things like ryzen which also have way more cores

the i7 has hyperthreading ( the i5 doesn't)

hyper-threading helps a lot it adds the performance of the core by 30ish% it is great to have it but IT DOES NOT replace actual cores, just how there's a shit ton of videos showing 2c/4t IS NOT the same as 4c/4t, having 6c/6t is more performance than 4c/8t, actual physical core always > hyper-threaded threads.

Exchange the PSU for the EVGA G2 or G3 since that is of superior built quality than the NEX.

 

You'll do on worse case scenario 4.7ghz, could stretch up to 4.8ghz even 4.85ghz... but if you want 5ghz deliding might become necessary.

 

Then again if you win the lottery it might 5ghz even without delidding, the AiO is sufficient to these overclocks provided you don't mind the chip running relatively hot... no throttling though.

Princess Cadence is right, go with the 8600K, you can check benchmarks on  youtube if you want. 8600k is superior to 7700k and there is no arguing. I myself have the 8600k overclocked at 5ghz with 1.290v, i won the silicon lottery in this case but from what i've seen you should have really high chances to get to 5ghz or close. I have the same AIO that you're getting and temps never go above 85C in gaming (I mostly play BF1 which is super cpu intensive and can get to 90% utilization). For other games i've never seen anything above 60% and 70C.
