Why do tablet/phone games suck so badly?

So the Nintendo Switch is basically a gaming tablet. With a tablet processor and GPU, yet the games for it are lightyears ahead of the amateurish crap you find on IOS and Android. Nintendo has proven you can make exceptional games with tablet hardware and a phablet sized display, yet people wanting to game on a phone or tablet are left with garbage for gaming options.

 

Obviously a big component of this is the lack of a controller. Touch screen controls just don't work very well for games. So why not make a controller docking case that your phone can fit into that gives you a control pad. If they can make a smart keyboard for tablets they can easily do this, and you now have a handheld gaming device. Nintendo or other manufacturers could license and port games for it and if it was marketed for this ability I would think it would sell like crazy, especially given how well the Switch has sold. Id love to use the gaming power of my IPhone 7 plus to play some decent games with decent controls instead of simplistic crap like angry birds and plants vs zombies.

I used to use USB-OTG and moonlight streaming to play games on my phone, but that was off my PC.

 

I basically use my phone for youtube now.

Sync RGB fans with motherboard RGB header.

I would disagree with mobile games sucking, I think it's more of a different market. Most people who have a phone are using that phone for texting and calling, first and foremost. The people who would want to play hardcore (relatively speaking) games on a phone are the same people who have consoles (sigh) or gaming PCs. The reality of the matter, is that most people don't have time to spend on long, great games on their phone. They just want that 5 minutes of entertainment. The majority of the market has never been exposed to good games and those that have would prefer to play on their current rigs. Phone are just not geared to that experience and there isn't enough money to be made from providing said experience. I do think you are confusing length with depth and enjoyment. There are plenty of mobile gems out there. My personal favorites are Egg Inc, European War 4, Seashine, Blood and Honor, Smash Hit, Auralux, Human Resource Machine and Tactile Wars.

Mostly poor controls, selling price limitation (what, this game costs more than 99c??!!!) and attention span/gaming time limitations. People game free games when they have a few minutes to waste waiting for the bus or something like that, you can hardly play something more than a simple reaction time based game in that context.

Last time I checked you can play all the GTA games up from San Andreas down on IOS and Android. You also have games like minecraft and other games. There are way more FPS shooters, free roams, car simulations, then you think. I found one and it was literally just a g-mod and a map ported to IOS. But I agree phones are very powerful and with efficient programing could easily kill every console.

Nintendo still makes and sells the 3ds/2DS handheld device, despite having a tiny lackluster screen and hardware that doesn't even approach mid range phones. I would argue that Nintendo 2DS games offer a way better gaming experience than the best android/IOS games. It seems to me this is an untapped market. I mean today everyone has a smartphone, and the overwhelming majority of people under the age of 30 play video games. I would think combining the two would make good business sense. Certainly not everyone with a smartphone is going to want to play a port of say Zelda a Link between worlds on their phones, but I'm willing to bet a huge number would.

You're comparing a seasoned game development company who has a tight grip on their platform to an ecosystem with an open market filled with mostly startups and amateurs. Of course Sturgeon's Law is going to hit hard there.

 

However there are some pretty decent mobile games out there. But like with Steam, you have to know how to sift through the poop from the gold.

It's because the target audience is different. The mobile market is flooded with crappy cash cow games that hope to bleed you dry with microtransactions. To achieve maximum spread and potential customer interaction, they are designed to be very simplistic and playable in very short sessions. This sort of game lures in children and bored stay-at-home parents who are more likely to splurge a few bucks here and there.

 

On top of that, the switch can count on you having a physical controller at all times. Mobile devs can't. There are ports of many old school masterpieces on android (namely quake 1-3, doom 1-3, jedi academy and more), but playing them on a touch screen inevitably hinders the experience. A touch screen is much better suited for the likes of angry birds (which is still a fairly good game compared to much of the garbage you see on the front page of the store nowadays) and farmville. That isn't to say you CAN'T make good games for a touch screen, but they simply make less money than clash of whatever clones - hence why you don't see many.

You have to sift through mounds of shovelware to pan for the gemware. 

 

While many phones today (and last year) can easily flay alive the last gen consoles as far as gpu performance goes, there are few devices that can maintain that performance without throttling heavily. So even if you get Skyrim on your phone, it probably won't be long before performance drops grievously.

 

Sticker shock exists as well. There are some great games I want on Android, such as The World Ends With You, and Dragon Quest, though the asking prices of these sorts of games tend to be very high in relation to literally everything else in the store.

 

If there was a proper "Steam" for Android where you have a marketplace built for hobbyist gamers, (flappy birds and candy crush need not apply) the state of mobile gaming may improve.

 

Emulation exists too, because F- Pokemon Go when I have the real thing.

Yeah. I've messed around with an emulator on PC a while back and found it a huge PITA, and got mixed results. I suspect on Android and especially IOS it would be even worse. Then there's the issue of getting the games to work on a blue tooth controller.

Most emulators from the 5th generation and before are relatively idiot proof to work with. Especially if it's a 4th gen system or earlier. It's 6th gen and on that's iffy because either it's still experimental and bug ridden or the system is really that complex to get something right. Though there may be a handful of 5th gen games that need a special checkbox ticked to get it to work, but those are rare. Emulators on Android and iOS are likely no different.

 

Also how would getting games to work on a BT controller be an issue? The only thing you'd have to do is setup the button mapping if the emulator doesn't already do it. Once you pair up a controller, it's effectively a controller attached to the system as far as the OS is concerned.

The game Never Alone: Ki Edition is quite good, though hurt somewhat by the touchscreen controls (which were already a bit clunky), but is otherwise a simple enough game that it's more than playable. The gameplay itself is a mix of platforming and some puzzle solving. There is relatively little hand holding compared to many modern games (even with the hint system in the mobile versions), so expect to figure out a lot of puzzles on your own. Not as brutal as the old Tomb Raider games however.

 

Graphics are quite good as is the art direction, though this game consumes vast quantities of RAM and can definitely make the GPU earn it's keep (and by that, I mean "what do you mean my battery dropped 20% in the span of ten minutes?!").

 

The audio is also very good, one of the game's strongest points. 

 

Tbh, I have a distinct feeling that lack of quality games isn't the problem for the Play Store, rather, you almost never see that At All displayed on the front page unless you search specifically for them. Hence the problem is Play Store itself.

Get a portable bluetooth controller for the bus ride and many games are WAY WAY better.

Touch controls ruin so many games...
