$135 CAD - worth it?

rasesh

I've got someone offering me a open box WD Blue 6TB HDD for $135 CAD/$106.50 USD.

It's got 0 read/write on it. Just powered on 2-3 times.

Is it worth it at that price or do these go on sale brand new for a similar price?

Thanks.

A great price if it's 100% clean and formated, and only been powered on twice

Confirm the drive is in good working order by inspecting the drive in person for physical damage and see a S.M.A.R.T report on the drive. Buying drives second hand is always a risky business. Can't always take the sellers word for it, especially if it's marked down by that much.

S.M.A.R.T report eh?

What should I look for in that report?

I'd be more worried about the mechanics, and smart won't say sh*t about that.

Plug the drive in, and you should here it start spinning and the head start moving in about 5 seconds.  Try copying some data to it, then reading it back.  If it goes below 10MB/s, walk away.  Also, I know this sounds weird, but smell near the pcb.  If anything smells burn, again walk away.

I would still check the SMART data.  You don't want any bad blocks, obviously, and the fact that you can see smart data is a good sign in and of itself.

And if they won't let you test it, then again, walk away.  You don't dick around with your data.  I've still never forgiven Linus for making that router with refurbed ssd's.  Raid 1 is just polish on that turd.
