Using a single 8pin cable for a 1080ti

GGNN

Hi there!

I just got my MSI 1080ti gaming x yesterday, and little did I know the box didn't include anything but the card and a 6pin to 8pin adapter! (I didn't even get a code to download a free game... I don't know what's up with that).

Anyways, the cable I used to power my old 660 was a single 6pin, and I was left with an extra 2pin dangling on the side, plus another 6pin+2pin on that same cable. I used that cable to power my new 1080ti since I didn't have a spare 8pin and really wanted to try it. Should I be worried about using a single cable to power a 1080ti? It seemed to be working fine, I played for little over an hour on BF1 and everything was running smoothly, the card was silent.

All I know is it's 750w, I'll be able to tell you more when I get home in a few hours.

You should be fine for the most part, the GTX 1080 Ti despite being a powerhouse it handles energy with amazing efficiency, so as long as it isn't lacking and it shouldn't with 750w PSU you're probably fine... I won't get into the merit of quality though just of usability.

no codes in the box any more - you should have gotten an email with the code in it.

so that's two 6+2 pin connectors on a single cable - if the PSU is designed that way, i see no reason why it should not be ok.

I didn't get anything but the delivery confirmation. Who should I be complaining to, then?

Amazon, MSI or Nvidia?

Man, I could have gotten either Shadow of War or Destinity 2, both of which I'm looking forward to play :'(

it should be fine but JaysTwoCents showed that daisychains can impact performance on NVIDIA cards a little while ago. if you can id say run another cable

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

I guess I can just buy an extra one, yeah, I still have room on my PSU. But a single cable will have to do for now.

If it looks like this from the psu  then you are fine.

That's exactly what it looks like, except that for the second 6+2, I used the 6 to 8pin converter included in the GPU, otherwise the cable was too short (it's one of those with thick twisted fabric around it, so I couldn't really twist or stretch it enough....)

As long as you aren't daisy chaining (hooking up 2 or more to one source) then you are fine, that's basically just a cable extension if I read that correctly.

no? thats still basically the same thing. what you want is a compleatly separate cable from my understanding. not that that wont work,  but for the best results you want two discrete cables

That's why I said "from the psu" to not confuse him with the splitter I put in

Just an aside, I run a single cable from my psu (seasonic 750) to both my R9 390's 8pin ports & it's been great.

I asked this when I got my card & was told it was standard practice.

Think if a 390 can run off a single, a 1080 should be good.

This happened to me with the 1060 6GB. It turned out that the code was e-Mailed to me.

I checked, and I got nothing.

Is it possible that since the offer wasn't specifically mentioned on the product page the day I bought the card, I might have missed it? (it's mentioned pretty much everywhere else)

It's a 1080ti but yeah I went to a computer shop yesterday and the guy said that running a 1080ti with a single cable is absolutely fine as long as both 8pins are plugged on the card.

Well, I guess that the retailer you used didn't offer the code.

The retailer is amazon.

You don't get emails anymore, I believe you need to register with GeForce experience or something to get it.
