I think the SE215s are still regarded as some of the most durable IEMs that sound good? I've got the Momentum In Ears which have lasted me over a year and a half and sound good, but they're pretty torn up now and have a V-shaped profile.

I bought the SE215s before and returned them because they would swivel too much when putting them in and they sounded the same as the headphones they were replacing

Well, if you intend to buy an IEM that you can "throw in my pocket everyday and sounds decent", getting an expensive IEM isn't ideal. I have the IE800, and while I love its fantastic sound, I'm constantly worried about damaging it (I have the habit of looping my IEM's over neck) should it slip off my neck, especially so for my metal shell IE800 and CampFire Audio Jupiter (scraped off some paintwork on my Jupiter as they swung around, one shell banging against the other). More so should the IEM be a plastic one like my Fitear Parterre. I can't seem to relax when I'm out and about with any of my pricier IEM's. 

 

I then hit upon the idea of getting cheap, but good sounding IEM's, and generally, you can find such IEM's....but these are made in China. Now, I know you might scoff at the idea of snagging ChiFi IEM's, but believe me, these have tremendous value.I had gotten a pair of grey Senfer 4in1 to try out (love its tight bass and sparkly treble), loved it so much, I'd gotten a 2nd pair in black. The great thing about ChiFi IEM's is that they sound great and some (like the Senfer 4in1 I have) have detachable cables as well. There are so many ChiFi IEM's out there, just read reviews and decide on what to get.....best part is, should you like a particular model, it'd be cheap enough that you can buy more than one (spare can be used as replacement should you damage or lose the one you're using).

 

BTW, isn't the IE80 above your stated budget of 200USD?

If you search around, you can probably find some Ultimate Ears Triple.fi 10 IEMs for around $200-250.  I got mine back in 2013 for about $99 (their old MSRP) and they sounded amazing.  I've since re-shelled them into custom ear molds, because the drivers sounded that good. They've lived in and out of my pocket, road case, bass bag, and pedalboard case for 4 years no with no sign of slowing down.  Those UE drivers just don't stop.  The Triple.fi's replacement, the UE 900s, are a quad-driver which also sound really good for $235 on Amazon. 

I've had Shure SE215s and hated them. They sounded about the same as my $30 Skullcandy for 4x the price.  But that's kinda been my experience with single-driver IEMs.  The best tonal range I've heard in a single driver has been from Westone in their UM10 or W10, for $150 and $190 respectively.  But still, in the $200 range, I'd be looking for a dual or triple driver IEM if you can find them.

If you are against the idea of going with chinese brands, try to find a used westone 4R, probably the best non-chinese IEM you can buy right now for $200

 

That said, chinese manufacturing has really stepped up their QC. They've always been able to make great quality products, but their QC was lacking. Now they're there.

 

I recommend going with $100 max if you are going to be somewhat rough with them. $200 really is a point for I think a lot of people where they start taking care more about their headphone or IEM. Unless, you are someone who's by nature good at taking care of gadgets. 

 

My recommendation right now is either TFZ king ($99) or TFZ Balance 2M ($200). They don't have the biggest baddest bass but you'll be happy with the overall balance of the sound. See sometimes the most important thing about bass isn't about how loud they are, but how low they go. Cheap headphones cover their inability to go into that deep rumbling bass with some dry bone mid-bass. Really good headphones in-fact dont have that much mid-bass but when the music calls for bass you can expect really good bass tunes

Is it even possible to buy the W4r anywhere? I owned a pair for a while, and they were absolutely fantastic, but I couldn't find a pair until 6 months of searching had passed - absolutely loved them though.

Chi-fi is a good recommendation for OP, given their dislike for the MMCX connector on the Shure gear (though I don't for the life of me understand why anyone would dislike the fact that they swivel. If I want to hear someone talking, I just swivel them up and have them sit on my ears while I listen to people, then put them back in when I want to listen to my music.)

Yeah, I feel like the swiveling is a plus.

However, one MMCX on my campfire audio orion was kinda broken, but they fixed it.

Audio Technica LS200 maybe? Quite comfortable from my experience and the A2DC connection on them is like a bulkier MMCX. They go for a little over your budget but I think they sound pretty darn good. But if your really looking for something you can throw around, your not gonna want to invest much. Stick with something you can easily replace or its in your best interest to take some extra time and be nice with them.

Yeah. I've used 2 pin on two pairs of customs as well as my W4r and I've used MMCX on about 8 different pairs of Shure IEMs across the last several years. The swivel is definitely superior, and more useful during the everyday. Anyone who complains about it isn't putting them in right.

For OPs benefit, Audio Technica headphones, more than almost any other brand are prone to loving or hating their sound. It's almost a requirement to be able to listen to any Audio Technica headphone before purchasing.

D'oh, yeah ceramic......but that only makes it worse for me. Dropping those ceramic shells onto the floor isn't something an IE800 owner would want to happen. Once, my IE800 slipped off my neck, I blame its rather short stock cable for this, but I was able to snag the cable before the shells/housings hit the floor. Never been able to relax after that, though I do use them from time to time.

I got these, there a bit out of your budget but damn do they sound good and are extremely durable. I had them over 10 years before they broke, and the company repaired them for around $80

Ety's are great, I have the ER6, it isolates very well (especially with the triple flange ear tips) but lacks some excitement in sound. Not sure about the ER4PT though....btw, I have the ER6 for more than a decade now (IIRC) and it's still going strong.

I get that too. Use an equalizer to add some color. I've found that because they are super neutral and accurate they take to equalization extremely well.

I'm hardwired to NOT use EQ, I dunno why though. Only time I'd tried EQ'ing is when I'm using my iSine 10 (since I've read that it response positively to EQ'ing and handles boosted bass pretty well) on my Tab S2 using Onkyo Music Player. Other than that, I do not touch the EQ setting on my handphones, and on my computer (using foobar2k)

The thing that a lot of people don't realize is that EQing can't make a headphone any more resolving, and really, an EQ shouldn't be used to drastically change the FR of a headphone (changing a mid-centric can to a V shaped can will likely never sound very good.)

 

It should mainly be used to accentuate a sound that you already love to change it to something that's perfect (in my opinion, anyway.)

 

EDIT: Also, EQ quality depends heavily on the quality of the software or hardware doing the EQing. Depending on what you're using, sound quality can be affected drastically, aside from just the change in FR.

 

Additionally, EQing, if done to the extremes, can cause an amp to clip which, in the most extreme cases, causes a DC current to pass through the coil of the headphone, which will almost certainly fry the headphone, if not the amp too.
