Can A GPU Perf. Decrease Over Time ?

adham.

The title says it all.

Just pure curiosity.
And wanting to know from much knowledgeable people in GPUs.

Thanks in advance.

P.S: Exclude heat and wear and tear if possible.
Just pure GPU.

No, unlike carbon based lifeforms, the silicon master race does not degrade over a period of decades, instead it takes far longer.

While we don't have big conclusive tests, I can safely assume from these two videos: no.

The GPU inside doesn't degrade after (a ton of) use and the drivers stay pretty much the same as well.

....but heat and wear and tear are what cause the gpu to degrade over time? If you took a gtx 280 out of the box now it would perform like new.

So in theory a GPU can perfome just as day one all the time ?

I know.
I'm just asking about the GPU itself. Like the ACTUALL GPU inside of the whole thing.

No. If the aliens that come by in the 32nd century to re-colonize Earth (after our nuclear fallout finally settles down) happen to find a GTX 1080 new in box amongst the ruins, it would run exactly as if it were taken out of the box today.

Well stuff like cooling will degrade over time if you never do any kind of maintenance ever, there basic care to be taken to ensure it's on going performance.

Temperatures are important as it directly hits the core clock the GPU can maintain.

If its new yes.

If you use it a lot usually less unless its been running non stop for a while then it might slightly degrade
