So I got a 8350k, my initial impressions

I consider myself an enthusiast and switch my pc parts out constantly - so the quirks and issues with Intel's strategy don't have as much of an effect on me.

I had a 7700k with z270e Strix board - and then out of curiosity switched to a 7800x with a Aorus 3 x299 board, and while I have kept that, my plan was to build a gaming system with the 8700k and Z370e Asus Strix board.

Unfortunately the 8700k is not really available yet, but I did manage to pick up a 8350k for me to play around with while stocks improve.

I also game with a 1080ti with 3440x1440 x34, so CPU isn't as big a deal for me gaming wise.

First, the 7800x. It's a good CPU, priced around $350 from some places now, but I know the x299 gets a bad rep. It's really not bad, but imo the 8700k beats it.

As for the 8350k, I am really impressed with this CPU so far. Geekbench was giving me single core around 5k, and after I overclocked it to a stable 5.1ghz using just a h60 cooler, I am getting around 5600 single on geekbench, and around 16k multicore. Cinebench was in the 800's, so that is a little lower than 7700k.

That's really impressive for an i3! That's almost 7700k range, matching it in the single core score. It overclocks really well too.

In games it seems to run just as good as my 7700k or 7800x, but then again I am at 3440x1440 with a 1080ti so the CPU isn't really much of a bottleneck. It's definitely being used more and closer to 100% vs the 7800x, though.

So is the i3 8350k really just a rebranded i5 7600k?

I care little for synthetic benchmarks. You didn't do any gaming benchmarks?

Ha, to be fair I did sell my 7700k, only kept 7800x and 8350k. Will likely sell 7800x and 8350k when I can get a 8700k.

The problem with gaming benchmarks is that at 3440x1440p, I am not seeing too much of a difference vs 7700k or 7800x. Maybe a few FPS overclocked, but not much. I think you'd need 1080p to really see it.

Eh, it's a hobby. Hobbies cost money. I wouldn't really call it a waste if it's something he really enjoys. I have a couple of $5,000 mountain bikes. Some would consider more than $200 on a bike a waste.

Do it at 1080p though, so you can put the stress on the cpu more so than the gpu. Do it at stock then OC.
