Want to sell my Ryzen 1700 and get a 8700k. Is it stupid/greedy? Or is it OK?

Hello,

I am disappointed with my Ryzen 1700. I lost the silicon lottery and got a bad CPU. It does not overclock well. I am stuck with 3700MHz. With Nzxt Kraken x62, it is 45°C at idle and 75°C under load. My vcore is 1.25v. With anything less this vcore, the system is not stable. CPU Load line calibration is at level 2, VDDSCR_SoC voltage is 1.1v and its calibration is at level 5. I wanted to set  VDDSCR_SoC LLC to level 2 but some people reported on the other forums that their CPU died because of VDDSCR SoC's load line calibration was 2 or 3.

I tried reinstalling CPU cooling system (because I thought it did not sit well onto the CPU) and also tried with the stock cooler and a Noctua cooler. Still running so hot. At least for me. Also tried to reapply the  thermal paste a thousand times. Still so high temps.

Before I bought Ryzen 1700, I had read and watched some reviews and I thought that it would be fine with gaming. The difference with 7700k did not seem so high.  Also, I just bought a new 165hz monitor and now I am reading 8700k reviews and it is whetting my appetite. Apart from this, I don't do video editing etc. but I run several virtual machines from time to time. So, 8700k should still be enough as my main use will be gaming.

Would it be a greedy action to sell my current CPU and motherboard and get a 8700k CPU and motherboard? Financially, I am fine with it. But still ... I don't want to be greedy.

My current setup

Doesn't Ryzen have a 20C lower actual temp than the temp shown?

3.7Ghz at 1.25v on a Ryzen chip under a 280mm radiator just shouldn't get that high. My ~4Ghz 1700X at ~1.38v tops out at around 68 under an H110i GT. Could you post pictures of HWiNFO under load or something?

All things considered if you have exhausted all troubleshooting avenues then grab a 8700k.

It may run just as hot but at least you'll have the performance to justify that heat output.

That is because there is a manufacturing defect on the 7700K, and they produced a larger gap than necessary compared to the 6700K. Once you delid it, it's fine.

IK, but delidding is not something most people are comfortable with (and I can't really blame them) and proper tools are decently expensive for a one-time-use every 4-5 years.

Well.  I saw in your Anandtech thread that you were going to give Ryzen another shot.  I'm not surprised they nudged you in that direction.  That forum is so AMD bios it is not even funny...it is actually a real shame.  That foum actually used to be pretty solid.  I'm actually banned from there for the next two days by their ridiculously blatantly bios mod MarkFW after pointing out his bias.  He said it was for profanity...the phrase was "re-goddamn-diculous".  If the content of the post would have been different, I'm sure it would have been overlooked.

You said you want don't want to go with 8700k and z370 because there is no promise of future chips (8c/16t) being compatable.  There is no one saying it won't be either.

You already tried Ryzen and were not happy with it.  Good luck the second time around.

Intel can run hotter than AMD's chip...right? IDC about temp so long as it is within spec. ALSO I was thinking of selling my 1700 too and getting an 8700k. I really like the single-core performance along with its very close multi-core performance. But I think that I will wait. The games that I play are CS:GO, HOI4, WarThunder, Cities Skylines and PUBG. In CSGO I would be getting more fps but I already get ~250, though it does stutter (I'm not sure why, I play the game in 1080 and 4k same settings and get the same framerate... just it stutters and the fps drops to ~100 and then "slowly" goes back up), so I think that the 8700 would stop the stuttering, im not sure if it's worth it... with WT I get ~200 fps at 4k everything up except AA so no problems. Cities will run a bit faster but that doesn't bother me with only running 30 fps when im fully zoomed in on the city of 50K pop. HOI4 would run faster, definitely in the late game when the AI's army starts to pile up because of a lack of war. But I don't think that it will be terribly faster and I have tested the game on a 6700k oced to 4.9GHz and it still seems to slow down, albeit at a slightly later time in the game. Lastly PUBG. It is so 'poorly optimized' that I don't think that the processor will stop dips to around the mid 40s from happening. I play at 4K on max except AA and i get ~60 to 70 fps with dips to the low 40s when in urban areas. All of this being said, I would like to 'upgrade' to the 8700, but I will wait a bit longer before completely making up my mind. DO you think that the somewhat minimal gains are worth it? If you want the be the best, then yes. Perhaps you could just sell your chip and buy a proven good 1700 to save a few, but that is just it, a few. (depending on the MB you get of course)

Changing the resolution in CSGO won't really affect your framerates because the game is completely CPU bound.  Frame drops in CS:GO are sort of inevitable on Ryzen due to the Source engine's optimization, but there are a few things you can do to get it running more smoothly.

I would also see if you can run at a lower refresh rate for the time being.

I decided to keep my Ryzen because:

1.) New Ryzen+ or Ryzen 2 will be coming in early 2018 hopefully. I can easily get one of them without changing my motherboard.
2.) Intel 8 core CPUs will come in late 2018 or later. When they arrive, I will think about upgrading again.
3.) I am playing games at 1440p so CPU will not significantly increase Frame per Second.
4.) Intel Kaby Lake kind of runs hot. Delid will require if I want to overclock it.

Update: I am running my CPU now at 3.9GHz with 1.425v vcore. After a few hours of stress testing with IntelBurnTest, it is max 80°C. But on Aida64 it is max 68°C. With Prime95 it hits 75°C or a little higher after several hours of stress test. I had loosened up the screws of my cooler a little bit. Maybe it did help.

No. Not necessarily Anandtech. There are many reasons I want to keep my Ryzen.

  • 1 year later...

Lately, my Ryzen system (the one in the original post) started to crush with any ram speed above 2666MHz. More sadly, it cannot go above 3.7GHz recently (probably as a result of degradation), even with 1.4volt.
I already had an inch to switch to Intel since 8700k came out, as you have read in this thread. Now that 9900k is released, I have decided it is time to upgrade and yesterday I ordered Gigabyte Aorus Z390 Master with 9900k from Amazon.de.
