Opinions on Seasonic M12II 620 bronze?

I see it lands as a Tier 4 PSU on the list. Is Tier 4 bad? Will this still be a reliable, safe PSU? How exactly are the Tiers determined?

They are on sale right now for $39 which would be a great deal as long as it's not a risk. This would be used in a build for my buddy with a R5-1600 and GTX1070.

 

Would a EVGA 110-BQ-0600-K1 ($39) or Corsair CX650 ($35) be a better choice? Originally the plan was to get him a G2-550W but at $88 it's a little pricey.

Having issues with a Corsair AIO? Possible fix here:

Are you getting weird fan behavior, speed fluctuations, and/or other issues with Link?

Are you running AIDA64, HWinfo, CAM, or HWmonitor? (ASUS suite & other monitoring software often have the same issue.)

Corsair Link has problems with some monitoring software so you may have to change some settings to get them to work smoothly.

-For AIDA64: First make sure you have the newest update installed, then, go to Preferences>Stability and make sure the "Corsair Link sensor support" box is checked and make sure the "Asetek LC sensor support" box is UNchecked.

-For HWinfo: manually disable all monitoring of the AIO sensors/components.

-For others: Disable any monitoring of Corsair AIO sensors.

That should fix the fan issue for some Corsair AIOs (H80i GT/v2, H110i GTX/H115i, H100i GTX and others made by Asetek). The problem is bad coding in Link that fights for AIO control with other programs. You can test if this worked by setting the fan speed in Link to 100%, if it doesn't fluctuate you are set and can change the curve to whatever. If that doesn't work or you're still having other issues then you probably still have a monitoring software interfering with the AIO/Link communications, find what it is and disable it.

Its actually a really solid PSU. I have it in my wife's Ryzen 3 build. I have the CPU, RAM, and GPU all overclocked on it no problem. It might be technically Tier 4, but Seasonic is a really good PSU maker, and for mid level builds its perfect.

The only thing turning me off with the Corsair is it is not modular at all. The Seasonic is fully modular.

It's a very solid  but also quite old design , and a psu made with quality components.

 

At the default price, it's not worth it because there are more efficient power supplies or power supplies based on newer designs for just a few dollars more.

 

But, at 39$, it's a very good deal.

 

Seasonic is simply refreshing their whole product line-up. They started with Platinum and Titanium power supplies (The Seasonic Prime) and now they launched Seasonic Focus Plus which is Gold efficiency and they plan to launch some new bronze series power supplies.  So they have to empty the shelves of S12II and M12II based power supplies

The Corsair CX650 you listed would be better but if it saves you money then get the 550W version.

This Seasonic PSU is... fairly antiquated by now. It was a good budget PSU especially for the time but there's better and newer options around even for the price, most notably the Corsair CX4/5/650M PSUs.

The M12II is not really a particularly safe PSU.

For that there are many things missing in the protection IC.

It just has the bare minimum that is required to call itself ATX.


Id does not even have UVP on +12V, does not have OCP on any rail. So no, it's not a particularly good unit.

Depends on how you define "better", what that means for you.

If you mean better protection, than yes, the other two are better.

I'm not sure what CX650 really is, if it has DC-DC or not.

 

But seriously:
If you save too much on the PSU, you pay a rather high price.

With a bit more expensive unit you get a way better unit. 

Better quality fan, quieter unit, better components thus higher expected Lifetime.

 

If you can afford a higher quality unit, you should absolutely get one of those instead.
