Linus got rekt by this 64k subs channel :P

What the title said seems that this guy with a smaller overall budget managed to make a wiser PC build than linus for less money.

go at 8:20 of this video if you just want to watch the part were linus gets rekt :P

This is a discussion of a build with a specific purpose.. the title, yes, might be a little clickbaty but it's not false either.

implying that subscriber count means anything when it comes to stuff like this.

It does because it is directly related to budget and also implies the plausibility to have strong companies to back you up(such as asus intel etc)  linus can test every piece of hardware he wants and thats not an exaggeration... this guy had a narrower selection to make yet he chose parts which work better for the same purpose (aka red raw footage rendering and general rendering) linus chose his parts and while spending less money that guy got a pc build with higher performance.

I think thats commendable at least.

both you and the creator are comparing  hardware that wasn't available at the time to what was. He could have tested with a lot faster hardware but he didn't what is your point

While I agree that sometimes LTTs videos arent the most researched, in his defense threadripper wasn't even announced let alone available when this video was posted on the channel (and you can assume the build was made months before the video gets to youtube). Not to mention that I don't think linus set out to make a cost effective build in the first place.

Gaming build:

CPU: i7-7700k (5.0ghz, 1.312v)

GPU(s): Asus Strix 1080ti OC (~2063mhz)

Memory: 32GB (4x8) DDR4 G.Skill TridentZ RGB 3000mhz

Motherboard: Asus Prime z270-AR

PSU: Seasonic Prime Titanium 850W

Cooler: Custom water loop (420mm rad + 360mm rad)

Case: Be quiet! Dark base pro 900 (silver)
Primary storage: Samsung 960 evo m.2 SSD (500gb)

Secondary storage: Samsung 850 evo SSD (250gb)

Server build:

OS: Ubuntu server 16.04 LTS (though will probably upgrade to 17.04 for better ryzen support)

CPU: Ryzen R7 1700x

Memory: Ballistix Sport LT 16GB

Motherboard: Asrock B350 m4 pro

PSU: Corsair CX550M

Cooler: Cooler master hyper 212 evo

Storage: 2TB WD Red x1, 128gb OCZ SSD for OS

Case: HAF 932 adv

What would be impressive is if this guy was able to get 8k editing for that price 5 months ago, before threadripper and i9 cpus were on the table.

Epyc was out for sure (if not threadripper as well) and yes he didnt research to make the most cost-effective build but thats irrelevant since the build of that other guy might be more cost effective as well but this is just an additional perk because, overall cost aside, in terms of raw performance this AMD build was superior to Linus's build as well.

PS Vega frontier edition was also commercially available at that time too.

Epyc might not have been out. Linus has said many times that it can take weeks to months to get some videos out after filming, and Epyc released in June, the video came out in July. It's possible it was out, but it's also possible this was built pre-epyc. to assume either way would just be speculation.

Its not since if that was true then he couldnt possibly get access to an i9 cpu... if he could get his hands on an i9 rest assured he could have a TR or an Epyc CPU too.

my bad i thought he used the i9 7900x.. again then he should try the AMD 1800x ryzen CPU since as we see in the video the 16 core TR cpu gets used only at about 50% for this task replaying 8k red raw footage.

He also could wait a few days since (besides making this video) he spent like 7000$ for a coprosseror to do something he plausibly could do with a 900$ CPU that will be released on early august (and this video released on late july) so what would make more sense?? waiting a few days or lets say a month (if this video was much older than its release date) or instead  spending 7000$ now for something that he doesnt mediately need anyway ... and he wasnt psyched about purchasing that red video card either.

To add to this conversation. Linus and JayzTwoCents were talking about a similar topic to this on the Wan Show a while back. The reason they don't use bleeding-edge components is that they aren't established enough for commercial use. So yeah, Threadripper, Vega and all of those can be proven to be much superior performance-wise but they don't have the stability that x99 and older platforms can offer. And stability is a really big strength in the commercial world as if one of their editing machines is down for a day, it can be a mess that takes away time and effort that should have been put into actual videos or whatever LTT people do. And what they are doing isn't anything new. When X99 came out, only around that time they switched to X79 (i think) because while X99 had improvements, it did not have the rock solid stability that they needed. Now with the i9s and Threadripper, they have upgraded to X99 because it is well established and has much fewer kinks. So they probably will switch over to Threadripper or something similar, but now is not the time. Hope this helps but as I didn't read this thread fully, it might not be too relevant.

Yeah this isn't something unexpected, at all. LTT has been making bad choices for their builds for quite some time now.

Come Bloody Angel

Break off your chains

And look what I've found in the dirt.

Pale battered body

Seems she was struggling

Something is wrong with this world.

Fierce Bloody Angel

The blood is on your hands

Why did you come to this world?

Everybody turns to dust.

Everybody turns to dust.

The blood is on your hands.

The blood is on your hands!

Pyo.
