LG 34UC88: 75Hz with Nvidia card?

EdwardIIV

Good day everyone.

I'm planning on getting the LG 34UC88, but was wondering whether I could get to 75Hz without any frame skipping, with an Nvidia card?

I've read in some places that they were able to get 75Hz, but they seem to always mention that it ends up frame skipping, so if anyone who owns the monitor or a similar one could shed some light onto this, that would be great.

Furthermore, I was also wondering if anyone successfully increased the FreeSync range to something lower, like 40Hz-75Hz, and if so how did you go about doing it?

Any help is appreciated.

Cheers.

FreeSync is not supported on Nvidia cards, so it isn't relevant here. As for the frame skipping, could those people be referring to the frame tearing that happens when FPS doesn't match up to a monitor's refresh rate?

I am aware of that, however this monitor doesn't allow for 75Hz to be used without FreeSync being enabled, and although it is possible to enable FreeSync on an Nvidia card to get the 75Hz, lots of people seem to say they experience frame skipping.

As for what "frame skipping" means, I believe it's basically when the GPU drops some frames that should be displayed. For example, if the monitor is 75Hz (like in this instance) you won't actually be seeing the full 75 frames that should be displayed; it would display less frames.

Could someone who owns this monitor and uses an Nvidia card (or someone who has information regarding this) perhaps shed some light on this? Is it possible to fully utilise that 75Hz without having an AMD card?

Sorry for the bump (and double post), but I'm still looking for an answer.

If anyone could chip in that would be nice.

Cheers.

higher that 60 stutters and isnt smooth at all

I have the 34um58 and can get 75hz with no frameskip. Probably a similar panel aside from inputs.

These are two very different inputs, so can both of you clarify?

@Ziodin Can you please try to overclock the monitor using CRU, or perhaps enable FreeSync and use the 75Hz natively? That would really help me out in further understanding whether 75Hz would work.

@dosmoney Have you tested out the UFO Test? If not, could you test it out here: UFO Test: Frame Skipping Checker

Thanks for both of your inputs.

Cheers!

yes i have tested. it passes. To get 75hz you must enable freesync in the monitor settings (game mode) even if not using freesync, then using the geforce control panel I created a custom resolution that does 75hz

Ah that's very interesting, because most people seem to say that there's frame-skipping. Thanks for your input!

I'd like to hear anyone else's experience with LG monitors (preferably the 34UC88 or 34UC98 or similar) and getting 75Hz on an Nvidia card. Cheers!

I tested the new Nvidia Adaptive Sync inside the advertised Freesync Range (55-75Hz) today. Adaptive Sync seems to work fine, but Frameskipping on 75Hz-mode is still a problem. I solved this issue by setting the Monitor refreshrate in the windows settings manually back to 60 Hz and afterwards to 75Hz. Sadly I have to do this steps again everytime i restart Windows because it seems to frameskip again after windows restart.

All tests were done with UFO-Frameskipping test and Nvidia pendulum demo.

Edit: Also no problem with Rainbow 6 Siege

Same issue here. Have to manually change the refresh rates in order to get the 75hz back. Stays fine until the monitor falls asleep on the lock screen, or the monitor is turned off manually. Then I have to tinker around with it to get it to work again.

Here a little VB.Net tool, which fixes the FrameSkipping@75hz after monitor wakeup. Works nice with my new 38WK95, just run once after boot:

Public Class Form1
Declare Function ChangeDisplaySettingsA Lib "user32.dll" (ByVal lpDevMode As Integer, ByVal dwflags As Integer) As Integer
Declare Function RegisterPowerSettingNotification Lib "user32.dll" (hRecipient As IntPtr, ByRef NotificationFilter As Guid, Flags As Integer) As IntPtr
Declare Function UnregisterPowerSettingNotification Lib "user32.dll" (ByVal Handle As IntPtr) As Boolean

Protected Overrides Sub WndProc(ByRef m As Message)
        If m.Msg = &H218 AndAlso m.WParam = &H8013 Then
            If System.Runtime.InteropServices.Marshal.ReadInt32(m.LParam, 20) = 1 Then
                Threading.Thread.Sleep(1000)
                ChangeDisplaySettingsA(0, &H20000000)
            End If
        End If
        MyBase.WndProc(m)
    End Sub
Private Sub Form1_Load(sender As Object, e As EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load
        Me.Tag = RegisterPowerSettingNotification(Me.Handle, New Guid("02731015-4510-4526-99E6-E5A17EBD1AEA"), 0)
        Me.Visible = False
    End Sub
Private Sub Form1_Closed(sender As Object, e As EventArgs) Handles Me.Closed
        UnregisterPowerSettingNotification(Me.Tag)
    End Sub
End Class
