Just how durable are modern phone screens?

I am going to upgrade from my droid turbo 2 and initially i'm gravitating towards another motorola with their shatterproof screen because it was so nice to not have a case and also not have to worry about the screen. Has other manufacturers made much headway in making their screens more durable or is still like you drop your phones from 5ft up onto concrete and there is a good chance there is going to be a crack?

pretty much. 

If you're on AT&T you can get an S8 Active.

unfortunately i'm stuck on Verizon.

 

so motorola or a small enough phone where a case won't piss me off.

Note 5 got stomped by a horse and the internals are fine. Screen has a crack going out from the bottom-right, but it still has touch-functionality.

Two slippery slabs of glass that are quite fragile, I wouldn't even consider using them without a case and I'm a self proclaimed Samsung fanboy.

 

The Moto z2 force has that shatterproof screen though

UAG's composite case is indestructible and thin ... my phone literally fell out of a 3 story window without a scratch onto concrete (not joking... it was charging on a windowsill in India where there aren't any nets on the windows in my family's house and someone knocked it out the window. $25 well spent.

I've picked up an S8+ that had been ran over by a car (or a few). Screen is destroyed,, not much left of it, though the body is in remarkably good shape, and the phone powers on. Working on tracking down the owner, if nothing else, the owner can get the data back with just a new display.

I love those cases, I used one on my s7. I'll be getting the monarch for my note 8 when they go on sale
