Migrating OS to SSD

I currently have a system that boots just off of a hard disk drive that has about a years worth of files stored on it. I am planning on purchasing a solid state drive in order to make boot times faster, and make windows more snappy. Is there a way i can migrate my OS to the ssd and make my ssd the boot drive while leaving the rest of my files in my hard disk drive untouched?

Get a Crucial SSD, those come with an Acronis key for easy migration. And even though they are not the racing kind of SSD they are quite fast and reliable

Main System:

Anghammarad : Asrock Taichi x570, AMD Ryzen 7 5800X @4900 MHz. 32 GB DDR4 3600, some NVME SSDs, Gainward Phoenix RTX 3070TI

 

System 2 "Igluna" AsRock Fatal1ty Z77 Pro, Core I5 3570k @4300, 16 GB Ram DDR3 2133, some SSD, and a 2 TB HDD each, Gainward Phantom 760GTX.

System 3 "Inskah" AsRock Fatal1ty Z77 Pro, Core I5 3570k @4300, 16 GB Ram DDR3 2133, some SSD, and a 2 TB HDD each, Gainward Phantom 760GTX.

 

On the Road: Acer Aspire 5 Model A515-51G-54FD, Intel Core i5 7200U, 8 GB DDR4 Ram, 120 GB SSD, 1 TB SSD, Intel CPU GFX and Nvidia MX 150, Full HD IPS display

If Windows is healthy, use Macrium Reflect. 

If Windows has a few issues, clean install. 

 

Did you make a 200GB partition when you first got the HDD?

There are ways to clone your HDD to the SSD, but it often create issues.


Best thing I think is just to make a back up of your files, and clean install windows on the SSD, then transfer files.

It's fast. Windows installation on SSD is quick.

This way you are sure to get a clean and fast windows

I wouldn't migrate it.

Whatever is valuable to you, just keep it on that hard drive and make clean Windows install. Then plug in your old HDD and copy those files wherever you want.

 

But like others said, there is tons of software available to let you clone your HDD to SSD.

Also Samsung has their Magician software for their SSDs which is also very good.

Don't migrate/clone your OS unless you enjoy having issues and then need to clean install anyway.
