Leaked Surface Mini (aka Surface Iris) images provide a closer look at Microsoft’s canceled tablet

 Surface Mini images leaked earlier this year, and now we’re getting an even closer look at Microsoft’s canceled tablet. Evan Blass has published marketing images for the Surface Mini, revealing a red rubber case with a kickstand and full specifications. The Surface Mini was reportedly a 7.5-inch device with a 1440 x 1080 display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, 1GB of RAM, and 32GB of storage. It appears that Microsoft was planning black, red, and blue variants of the Surface Mini before its cancellation.

 The Surface Mini was powered by Qualcomm’s ARM processor, and was designed to run Windows RT and support the Surface Pen. Codenamed Surface Iris, the mini tablet looks like a note taking device for students, or even a tablet for kids thanks to its size and colors. Surface chief Panos Panay previously described the Surface Mini as “like a moleskine,” further cementing its creation as a notepad replacement.

Judging from the looks of the leaked Surface mini tablet, it kinda looks like the discontinued Nook HD tablet or a Nexus 7 2013 inside a red case, which back in 2013 dethroned the first iPad mini when it comes to the best 7" tablet in 2013 in my opinion. The first iPad mini shipped with a lackluster 1920 x 1200 resolution and a dull color gamut as well as recycling the old dual-core A5 chip used by the iPad 2 from 2011 whereas the Nexus 7 2013 rocks a 1280 x 720 display with a much brighter and higher contrast IPS LCD than the one in the iPad mini and is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro SoC.

Now, I'm glad Microsoft didn't continue the Surface Iris because back in the day, there's just no interest for Windows RT from both consumers and developers. I mean, app switching with Windows RT is meh in comparison to iOS and Android back in 2013. With iOS, you either double tap the home button or swipe four fingers up to bring up app switcher. With Android Jelly Bean and beyond, just click the app switching icon and it will show cards of apps. Windows RT's app switching is cumbersome. Swipe from the left then quickly back down to bring it up and it doesn't show all opened apps. 

 

Which reminds me if Microsoft's plans of running Windows 10 to ARM powered PCs to be a success or not.

We're past the second half of 2017 and there's not a single sight of any ARM powered Windows 10 PCs just yet until Q4 of 2017. I have a feeling that this might be another Microsoft vaporware but I hope it's not. I think running UWP apps is not a problem on ARM but possibly that x86/64 emulation is. I feel this might confuse consumers even more since Windows 10 on a Intel/AMD laptop looks exactly like Windows 10 on a Snapdragon powered laptop. I'm not confident that a Snapdragon 835 can run something like Adobe Premiere smoothly even with 8GB of RAM but that is just me speculating.

But I would say cumbersome is definitely a stretch.

That's because the only reason to use windows is the insane app compatibility. Take that away (anything that's not on the store would have to be recompiled for windows arm) and it becomes by far the worst option. Seems like they didn't learn the RT lesson after all.

I probably shouldn't have said cumbersome but it's not as intuitive as iOS and Android's app switching imo. Swiping from the left thenquickly backing to the right doesn't show all of opened metro style apps and you can't scroll through those recently opened apps unlike the other two operating systems.

Your comparing apples to oranges, Windows RT is not Windows on ARM. The later having better performance and designed/optimized to work with an ARM processor, RT was just watered down Windows.

I can only say so much as we dont know yet just how well WIndows on ARM performs outside of MS's demos.

Eh? Windows RT was built specifically to run on ARM. It was literally 'Windows on ARM', designed and optimised to work with an ARM processor. 

 

The 'latter' you mention doesnt exist in the wild yet, so you can't say how well it will perform. Right now, it's nothing more than Windows RT with an x86 emulation layer.

Most likely for business. Its more of a mobile focused OS really. As a WM10 user myself it takes on the view of possibly replacing the Windows Mobile/Continuum concept MS developed. Their CShell idea is what has helped develop the Windows on ARM concept (at least to where it is now)  if I remember correctly. From what I have seen so far it has tons more potential than both RT and Windows Mobile. But as I mention we have yet to see any real world performance outside of MS demos. Guess we will wait and see ...
