Can't decide 7700k vs 1700x

Go with a 1700 for sure, it will really help. Can I suggest a M.2 Drive?

i7 7700k = will be faster and better at editing and gaming but you can only do one or the other at once.

r7 1700 = will be slower at editing and gaming but you can do both at the same time?

 

If you'll stick to Adobe software mostly for editing I'd personally go i7 7700k as it still seems much more gain from faster cores than more cores.

 

Either will do all you need it to do though... if you multi-task a lot as mention Ryzen is a better pick but if you focus 1 thing at a time the Intel offers better experience.

The problem with going 7700K now is that the platform is pretty much EOL and you've got no upgrade path.

Thats for Video editing, Photoshop is pretty single threaded. May be good for OP to wait for Coffeelake and the 8700k if they can.

There is nothing to explain, Adobe software prefers single thread performance as it doesn't parallel workloads as much, if you get to the maximum of workload distribution to the threads the software is programmed to manage to do the only way to speed things up is by having better performance on these used cored be by IPC, frequency etc.

 

People don't buy Ryzen because it is "fastest" with a bunch of cores even though that applications that can take use of it surely will, they rather get Ryzen for the insane increase in multi-tasking you achieve by the high thread count, meaning you don't have to have only one content creation application open, you can have multiple ones to speed work up as a whole.

 

Photoshop uses no more than 8threads, the i7 7700k will outperform the Ryzen 1800x all day long on it SHOULD that be the only main task running on the system, as you open more stuff Ryzen 7 can keep the original performance as the i7 7700k will start having to share resources slowing Photoshop down.
