Upgrade from 280x to 780 Ti for free?

Due to the mining bubble, I can sell my 280x and buy a reference 780 Ti or a good AIB 970 at no cost, would it be worth it going through the hassle of selling to do this? Is it that much of an upgrade? Or should I just wait and do something else like get a used 980 Ti early next year for like $275?

Yeah I'd do it why not. I would go with a 970 over a 780ti if you're able to though. It gets significantly better driver support.

It has better support, but doesn't the 780 have better raw performance?

I just sold my ref RX470 for a Strix 970 just needed to get away from that damn reference cooler and made a decent profit, for you hell yeah go for it.

Yes the 780ti has better raw performance. IIRC its raw performance is about 980 (non ti) levels. However if you're gaming none of that matters because the 780ti is so unoptimized for that it opten performs between a 960 and 970. The 780ti is a great card, and can still game comfortably at 1080p high/ultra and 1440p medium/high in modern titles, however I wouldn't buy one over a 970.

Ah, makes sense, I have been reading about the whole 780/680 driver controversy lately. I will see what I can get, it'll basically come down to whatever I can get for the money, the 780 Ti is still somewhat cheaper than the 970 because they all have that awful reference cooler, AIB 970s are a bit more expensive but if I can get a good one I'll go for it

I do believe it pretty much is on par, if not better than the GTX 970 in nearly all new cases. However, the 780ti is quite a bit older, which in term can mean in some newer games developers aren't going to optimise a game as well for cards of the age, but instead optimise it better in each update for newer cards if that makes sense.

 

This kind of optimisation is showed in LinusTechTips's new driver sandbagging video, were in some cases the GTX 970 was best in nearly all games made at the time of 780ti and abit later, however newer titles made in the last year or to much better favoured the GTX 970 with better optimisation for it.

I know my original titans out scored my 970 and manyon the fire strike boards. So I know my Titan blacks would be better. Used to game on a single one on 1440. Would happily do it again. Held up great on bf1. Before all waves of patches.

 

Would do it myself. If not waiting for some kind of 980 would be preferred. Maxwell Titan just popped up on Craigslist here, was gonna get that or a nib pny 1080. Both for 350.

Yeah, although in theory that means when Volta comes out and Nvidia stops giving a shit about Maxwell, the 780ti and 970 will be on equal grounds in terms of game optimization (or lack thereof) making the 780ti faster again. IDK though, just logical. I have no historical context or any actual information on this.

Yeah, I was heavily considering a 980/980 Ti but I can't really afford it ATM, a 780 Ti or 970 would just be a free upgrade right now +/- y'know like $10 at worst, whereas a 980 would be another $60 at a minimum and more for a Ti. 

 

I might do the flip and then later on when I can get a good 980 Ti I will just sell the 780 Ti/970.

 

I am more leaning towards the 970 despite the extra $10-20 because I really do not want a blower cooler and after digging up some benches, while avg frames are similar, frametimes are definitely better with the 970, and the extra .5-1gb of VRAM does come into play on occasion.

Pfff, I honestly would not mind to much if nvidia no longer cared very much about maxwell cards. I really really doubt maxwell cards like the 980ti will become obsolete  any time soon since mine absolutely shreds games like Watch Dogs 2 which are quite recent at 1440p completely maxed out on everything and it looks incredible breathtaking. The 970 pretty much has always been a good sweet spot card and willl continue to be so should prices remain as they are now

Yeah.... I said the same about my 780ti. Driver support makes a bigger difference than you'd think. My 780ti was equal (about 5% slower give or take.... it was very close) to a 980, so I didn't bother using EVGA step-up which could have let me get a 980 for free. Then driver support ended and I was stuck with what is basically a 960ti. The 980ti may be a 1070 now, but it will probably be an 1150ti when Volta comes out.

Blower style cooler is perfect for kepler. Assuming your case any decent air flow. Mine can run very low, as in mid to low 50's.
