Highest ipc processor?

Hey guys. I'm trying to find which processor has the highest ipc score without being way too expensive. I do a crap ton of gaming, and more often then not I'm playing a game that is early access and poorly optimized for CPU/gpu. In games like DayZ, miscreated, rust, Etc my I5 6500 is pegged at 100%. I'm just curious what would do better. The reason why I ask for a higher IPC is because most of these games only utilize the first two cores so throwing a 16 core ryzen chip at it wouldn't change anything.

I have an evga GTX 1070 and 16 GB of RAM. If I wanted to overclock I would have to swap boards, I have an h170. From what I've seen the 7700k is only 5% faster then the 6700k, is it even worth the cost of deliding, water cooling, and Getting a bored that can overclock

You should specify a budget. A delidded i7-7700K with good cooling, fast memory and a bit of luck from the silicon lottery is your best bet.

No it's not worth it, unless you want to just to have the best of the best. Some times you spend crazy amounts of money on things that are not worth it to have the best.

When Intel stops being petty that AMD is actually doing something again and also actually does something worth it as an upgrade (less mayo TIM would be a plus), the "8700K" should be a good pure gaming chip next gen for the mainstream platform.

 

Also what @DrMacintosh said. At a certain point, Intel Vs AMD doesn't matter.

From what we're seeing...Coffee Lake may not actually be better, in terms of clock speed. Even if it's slightly better IPC and power draw, 3.9 ghz is a ways away from the 5Ghz achievable on the 7700K.

 

I understand you're price averse, but we're in a weird slump right now with this whole "more cores" initiative. Picking up a 6700k and OCing to 4.5 is not an unwise move.

If your cpu is pegged at 100% you need more cores not IPC.

 

You have a 6400, ie skylake IPC.  That's a few % (2-5 or so I've been told) faster than haswell (same as ryzen) and about 4-8% (again, I've never tested myself) slower than kabylake.

 

All to say that an i7 6700k is your best bet.  No new mobo needed and I recommend the 6700k as it has good TIM, a 4.0ghz base as opposed to 3.6ghz on 6700 non k and runs more consistently cooler than a 7700/7700k

Final note, base clock on 8800 seems to be 3.2ghz and the 8700k seems to be 3.6ghz base so not so good if you aren't going to OC.

Currently the i7-7700K is the best consumer grade chip on the market in terms of IPC. Alternatively, you could wait for 8th Generation Intel Coffee Lake CPU's as the i7-8700K is rumored to have 6C/12T at the cost of a lower frequency. All you'd have to do to fix the lower frequency is have a Z370 board to overclock with. A good cooler would also be recommended.

If you've got games that only use two cores (for some weird reason), you might as well get an i3.  But your i5 wouldn't be at 100% if the games were only using two cores.  You're much better off with getting a Ryzen 1600 or delidding a used 6700K.

The whole reason I'm not doing that is because I will need a new board and a new chip. If coffee lake turns out to be a good alternative then I can just drop it in and be good to go

It's not that o don't have enough cores, like I said I tend to play early access games that only use the first 2 cores. If I needed a crap ton of cores then I would get ryzen

100% usage = all cores in use...  Its that simple.

 

No offense but 4 core cpus are dropping dead.  Most games will use 4-6 cores, even early access ones.  Besides, if you run ANYTHING else in the background say goodbye to your consistent frames.

lol why are people even trying to stick ryzen in here? we all know ryzen has garbage ipc compared to kaby lake. 7700K at 4.8-5GHz completely annihilates the entire Ryzen 7 at 3.9-4.1GHz lineup at 144hz gaming.
