Let's go over why this sort of thing happens.

 

In order for Microsoft to do their job to make their OS work on a wide variety of systems, they need close-ish relationships with the hardware manufacturers that they want to support. This is important because if they run into a problem that only seems to happen on that particular hardware, they can contact the manufacturer in question to figure out what's going on. They probably don't have access to the IP of that hardware or the software that supports the hardware so they can't make their own fixes. And reverse engineering is a legal gray area that's probably not worth the risk.

 

So what happens when said hardware manufacturer decides to stop supporting the hardware? If Microsoft comes across a problem with that hardware, then they're pretty much dead in the water because the manufacturer won't really help. They've stopped supporting it. The only way for the company to re-support it is for Microsoft to pay whatever heads they need on the company's side to figure it out (which the US Government has done to keep Windows XP support). Or if the hardware or its support software has such an egregiously bad thing going on with it. Microsoft themselves does this from time to time, coming out to patch "unsupported" OSes because of a huge flaw someone found. Wannacry wasn't the first time Microsoft patched an "obsolete" OS. A long while ago, I think it was late 2000s, they released a patch for Windows NT 4.0 and 2000 because of a cmd.exe bug.

 

So once the manufacturer stops supporting the hardware, Microsoft will have to follow suit on their end and stop supporting the hardware for their OS.

 

In this case, people speculate that the unsupported hardware isn't from Intel. It's the PowerVR GPUs that Atom has been using for some time.

Also SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE MADE CLEAR: Support does not mean the software will not work with the hardware or vice versa. It means the company will not help you unless you give them a huge reason to.

 

Though in this case, Microsoft seems to want to just not want to allow you to install Windows 10 on unsupported hardware. I don't think they should do that, but it would save them a ton of headache from laymen going "I installed Windows on [unsupported hardware], why won't it work?"

Could you explain where people get the PowerVR theory? PowerVR series 5 supports DirectX 10.1, and has a WDDM driver. The hardware requirements in the Creators update haven't changed for your GPU, it needs to support DirectX 9 (check) and the driver needs to use WDDM 1.0 or newer (check).

 

I get that it could be an existing driver bug that only started causing issues with the new kernel, but how likely is that really?

 

I would love to see someone force an install onto one of these devices, just to see if it actually even has any issues.

My new netbook 2012 runs crap on win10, and only good with the factory win8 os. Amd apu in my netbook is trash. Can't even play a youtube video without lag and cpu peg at 100%.
