Sacrifice Resolution to play a game?

Just a curious question, are there any gamers out there that would turn the resolution of a game down to like 720p to play a game on an old piece of hardware? I am building a PC here in the next few days and I can't afford the 1060 6GB or RX 480/580 because of the current mining craze. So I'm just going to get a cheap GPU to play games at 720p until I can get something for 1080p..... will that discourage my experience?

Currently play on a 4 year old laptop with a 640m with res to 720p and getting about 15-20 fps for an hour before the laptop crashes... playing games like Darksiders. Awesome story so far BTW reminds me a bit of Legend of Zelda.

nothing wrong with reducing settings. PC gaming allows you to do such things. tho i wished 1060s and 480/580 were in stock... it's really bad at the moment, so i can feel the frustration

Turning the resolution down wouldn't really matter too much, as long as the monitor handles the scaling properly. The best way to do something like that is use an older, cheap monitor that has a native resolution of whatever lower resolution you're looking for. That way you won't have the weird looks of a lower resolution on a higher resolution monitor.

Main System: Phobos

AMD Ryzen 7 2700 (8C/16T), ASRock B450 Steel Legend, 16GB G.SKILL Aegis DDR4 3000MHz, AMD Radeon RX 570 4GB (XFX), 960GB Crucial M500, 2TB Seagate BarraCuda, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations/macOS Catalina

Secondary System: York

Intel Core i7-2600 (4C/8T), ASUS P8Z68-V/GEN3, 16GB GEIL Enhance Corsa DDR3 1600MHz, Zotac GeForce GTX 550 Ti 1GB, 240GB ADATA Ultimate SU650, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations

Older File Server: Yet to be named

Intel Pentium 4 HT (1C/2T), Intel D865GBF, 3GB DDR 400MHz, ATI Radeon HD 4650 1GB (HIS), 80GB WD Caviar, 320GB Hitachi Deskstar, Windows XP Pro SP3, Windows Server 2003 R2

I would wait, honestly it makes no sense to buy (even used) a cheap GPU just to swap it out for another one, in the end that just costs more money because good luck reselling the old GPU for what you pay for it.

$850. Emphasis on the Ryzen platform for the workstation aspect for my wife who edits photo's and videos for events.

I do agree though LoZ is better in a lot of ways I just said it reminds me of it a bit.

I need a GPU though since Ryzen doesn't have integrated graphics. I can always recycle the GPU too (Probable a 1050) when I build my mother a new PC that is 8 years old.

Yeah any lower than 720p and my characters head is chopped off for some reason ha-ha. Any advice on cooling a laptop? I have a fan pointed at the laptop and it elevated on the corners to help ventilation but it still runs at 90 and after about 20-30 minutes of shuts off.

Other than opening it to replace the thermal paste and clean the dust out, nothing much really. You could use it in a freezer. Just kidding, don't put your laptop in a freezer, especially while running.

1) Darksiders is a brawler hack and slash game where Zelda is an action RPG with hack and slash elements.

2) How much are you looking to spend and what location/currency?

I'm looking to spend about $850 in US dollar

Oh this is for the whole build not just the GPU.

I have played a lot at 720p on my laptop and on the LAN PC, I don't mind it usually. It's not great and I prefer my 1440p screen at home but there is nothing wrong with good ol standard HD if you have too :)

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

I would turn off absolutely anything and everything else before I resorted to lowering the render resolution below your monitor's native. Dropping your resolution makes games look truly wretched, like you're going back to the original Playstation.

And I really don't think saying Darksiders (1, at least) is a similar sort of game to the Legend of Zelda is that controversial a statement. It's obviously inspired by Zelda-style RPGs. o.O
