What food is distinctly "American"?

Chaos_Sorcerer

Just some random thing I thought of.

On a side note, what food is distinctly "Canadian"?

EDIT: Okay, so this could be traditional foods, or pretty much anything dish that is associated with the American culture, and not really any other.

Also, what do you guys eat on a day-to-day basis?

I thought the purpose of the question was to make that point you just mentioned. But when most people refer to something as being "American", they refer to it being from the United States.

most people

The world is a gigantic place, in Portuguese for instance we call someone from the United States as "estado-unidense" instead of "americano" since "americano" is someone from the American continent.

Part of the deal with globalization is not guessing without really knowing what "most people" should know or not, it is simply answering a simple question without trying to sound condescend.

Cheers.

I'd say Southern foods like gumbo, grits, and jumbylya, barbecue, and bourbon whiskey as American

Things out of Louisiana are more in French origin than "American." Only thing I can really consider to be "American" is our different styles of BBQ.

No because tire American (native American) would be like buffalo and veggies and deer and stuff like that. Wild game and veggies and fruits. Because before America was taken over that was the food.

As for USA we Americanized all out food. I'll say out food is fast junky food. We took everyone's food and made it worse for you. The American way.

But that's also because America (USA) is a mixtures of like every ethnicity

So chop suey and most foreign foods that became Americanized? I would agree.

By most people, I meant "most people" who use the word "American" in the English language. If you look up the word "American" in any English dictionary, the first definition will almost always be "of or denoting to someone/something from the United States of America". If I said "I'm American", would most people who speak English be confused as to my nationality? No. Could I have, however, been referring to my origin from either of the Americas? Yes, but that is like describing a French person as simply being "European". It's technically true, but when asked for your nationality, you don't cite the name of the continent. I think it was pretty obvious what I meant. It seemed to me like you were trying to make a point that the word can also technically apply to things from the two continents rather than asking a genuine question.

Where does globalization come into this? Did I appear condescending?

But then, I would've most likely added "native", "indigenous", or "aboriginal" to the title.

well that is a true american and even to this day, a native american is native, all of use born in america call ourselves american becase we were born here, not becase we have an american heritage. im 100% swedish but i was born in america so im im considered an american to the government. my parents are both 100% swedish. they consider me an american with swedish heritage. but really im swedish.

no one is an actually american unless they are native, so the natives diet would be considered true american food.

maybe you dont need to add native to your title, but you could make it "whats modernly considered america food". or something to that effect

Some interesting comments on here.

Let's not forget just a few weeks ago when Trader Joe's "invented" a new item that was sausage in flaky pastry, called a "puff dogg" AKA a sausage roll, when sausage rolls have been around in the UK for 100's of years.

That's like saying New Zealanders are not New Zealanders unless they're Kiwi...or that South Africans aren't South Africans unless they speak Bantu...or that Han Chinese are the only Chinese...you can't exclude a race from being considered of certain nationality.

If I were to ask what a certain country's cuisine is like, I would be asking what is consumed by the majority of people that live there...not what is eaten by the small minority of the region's original inhabitants.

The official name of the country that shares its southern borders with Mexico and its northern ones with Canada is "the United States of America". There isn't any other name for the nation in English. There isn't any other name for things/people from the country. Therefore, the widely accepted meaning, and the most common one, for "American" in the English language is something along the lines of "relating to something/someone from/of the United States of America".

Referring to a cuisine from the two American continents doesn't make much sense to me, because of how diverse it would be. Cuisine is typically unique to a certain region or nation, not entire continents. Imagine walking into a restaurant in Amsterdam and asking if they have "European food" (or the translation in Dutch). I don't think they would know what to serve you.

Deep Fried Twinkies/Oreos?

In all honesty I've always considered a hotdog to be as american as it gets, mainly because of its association with baseball and that being the notable American sport.

But then again, its basically a German Bratwurst. Around my area its mainly German heritage so German food = American food.

Isn't ranch dressing called American sauce in Europe?

Subways over here in England call it just "ranch"

Seen it in a few supermarkets as "ranch dressing" too. It's definitely not something i've seen alot of though.

There is this bad boy, never tried it myself, or tried Ranch tbh, so wouldn't know if it's the same.

Looks like some American kid at a weekend barbecue put some ketchup in the ranch bottle. I wonder how it tastes? Are these available in kanata?

I've only ever seen them at the fair, I despise Twinkies so I've never tried them deep fried. The oreos are pretty good, but you can only eat a couple else you would get sick. Its tastes like a milk soaked oreo in the center of a small donut, then chugging a cup of vegetable oil.

Last year I saw they even had deep fried candy bars... its getting pretty bad.
