Does Ryzen work better with faster ram?

7 minutes ago, fastcar123 said:

I have a ryzen 1700 system. I OCed my ram to as high as 2966 MHz.

the system became quite unstable and the gains were negligible at Best. Maybe just a bad OC, but id say it wasn't really worth it.

I went back to 2400 stock speeds.

are you using all your dimm slots? my thing is that I don't care about running at 3200 i can roll back to a lower frquency but I want to be able to add 16GB and populate all 4 dimms, otherwise I would have to buy two 16gb sticks and toss the ones i have right now which is a waste of money cause i just built the computer 2 months ago

oh sorry about that. I'm only using just the 2.

Linus tested this, there is no performance gain above 2666mhz, unless you are using integrated graphics, which Ryzen doesn't have. Just go with the 2400mhz or get 2666

That video is competently and utterly useless for Ryzen

Going from 2133-3200 one can see a 10-15% boost using higher-end GPU's for gaming. Not much of a difference for GPU's that are around a 1060/580

This video he actually compares Ryzen with slower 2133 to 3200

Anything you can tell us about the 4 dimm issue? Apparently Ryzen motherboards would not post to windows when all 4 dimms are populated.

I tested my system at 2133 2933 and 3200 and the 3200 was the best but only 5 percent better in gaming than 2933 and 12 percent better than 2133

the happy medium in price to performance is 2600 apparently acorfing to the tech changes but just spend the extra and get a 3200 kit

My concern woudl be stabiltiy and reachign those faster RAM speeds. So far many have struggled to get to 3000mhz and be stable.

You should always buy faster RAM, regardless of the platform, as long as the chipset allows the faster speeds.

The sweet spot for DDR4 seems to be around the 3000-3200MHz range, but Ryzen has a caveat. Ryzen doesn't do well with all four sticks being populated due to DIMM rank being an issue. I'd go with two sticks of 8GB (for 16GB total) at 3200MHz, one for each channel. Going with two 16GB sticks will present the rank issue since you're going into dual-rank DIMM's meaning you'll be at four ranks total unlike the two with 2x8GB.

Please note that you are only on a 980Ti and you saw a 12% boost? That's pretty massive as that card even when OC is only slighty faster then a 1070, video i linked showed that with more powerful cards the difference gets bigger

For example my 1080 would see a slightly higher performance on faster memory compared to a 980Ti

Out of the gate Ryzen should boot with 4 dimms but the issue is with faster memory speeds above 2133-2400. In that case i've heard that people are starting to get higher frequency past the latest v1.0.0.6 AGESA.

Ryzen has rank issues still. Unless you need 32GB, it'd be better to only use two sticks, one in each channel.

Find @MageTank's guide on RAM overclocking (last I heard, he's still working on Ryzen OC guide), but it should give you some extra performance if you're willing to put the time into it.

This Agesa is the Bios updates correct? Is this issue of running all 4 slots at high speeds is something that could be addressed with updates or no?

Should I get 16gb of ddr4 2400 or 8gb of ddr4 3000

Ryzen does seriously benefit from faster ram . However , knowing this , i would recommend getting that ddr4 2400 kit .

RAM support is considerably better since launch , and you should be able to get advertised speeds regardless of the kit .

However , Wendell did a video regarding ram speed and ryzen's IF speed ( the reasonryz"en benefits so much from faster ram ) . He found that the benefits of faster ram beat out the drawbacks of the associated high latency .He said that every ddr4 kit he tested was capable of 3200mhz+ once the CAS latency was tweaked .

I'd recommend getting that 2400mhz kit and getting OC as high as possible with a CAS of under 18-20.

I got my personnal ddr4 2800 kit to 3200mhz cas 16 , which costs me way less than if i had bought a ryzen-compatible ddr4 3200 kit .

AMD Ryzen R7 1700 (3.8ghz) w/ NH-D14, EVGA RTX 2080 XC (stock), 4*4GB DDR4 3000MT/s RAM, Gigabyte AB350-Gaming-3 MB, CX750M PSU, 1.5TB SDD + 7TB HDD, Phanteks enthoo pro case
