I think that makes you the new 8 core ambient champ.  Post those results with CPUz in the LTT Cinebench thread.   Congrats man.

Well shit...Might as well give the other 7820x guys something to aim for...

  • 3 weeks later...

I got my 7820x back from Silicon Valley today.  The delidding netted me at least 10c which intern netted me at least 100MHz.  I now get the same temps running 4.8GHz @ 1.285v as I did 4.7GHz @ 1.234v.  Max temp was 81c in 2hr Realbench stress test in both cases.  Tomorrow I am going to see what kind of voltage it takes to get 4.9GHz stable and if I can keep it cool enough.

4.8GHz maxing at 81c isn't too bad for an AIO.

Well...I guess it is time to give the delidding and AIO a real test. I'm going to give an hour in Prime95 with AVX a try....power limits set to 450w,Current Protection set to extreme, and -500 AVX offsets.

Burn baby burn.

Linpack, with a dash of MKL. I like to thoroughly overclock my ram for hours before hand, so you get that burnt silicon aroma. Really helps the dish stand point.

Not bad.  It stayed in the 80s.  The hottest core hit 89c and VRM maxed at 78c.

I'm not sure, but I think my rig might be idling a bit high?  I think the new SSD that I added might be drawing more power.

That cache peaked nice and high at some point.  Nice work on pushing some stress through the system!

I noticed the cache spike also.  It is still running.  We'll see if anything exciting happens in the second hour.  It is probably getting pretty heat soaked by now.

I am just now figuring out how to get the voltage offset to work how I want with my Gigabyte board.  Coming from Asus, I have had some learning to do.  The good new is, that now with the voltage no longer pinned at 1.235, the 7820x actually looks to be running a good bit cooler.  I am 20 minutes into Prime 95 "Standard Blend" with AVX and my hottest core has been 79c.  9c cooler than it was with fixed voltage.  It is actually spending much of it's time at 1.133v, which I would assume is because of the AVX offset lowering clocks.

Ooh, offset voltage sounds handy. On my lowly 7800X I separately settled on 4.3 GHz 1.10v AVX (P95 stable), and could do 4.8 GHz 1.25v non-AVX, although I haven't verified that in depth yet. 4.9 needed a big voltage bump and was reaching the limits of my cooling. Still, if I could figure out a way to do mixed voltages on Asus board... :)

Gaming system: R7 7800X3D, Asus ROG Strix B650E-F Gaming Wifi, Thermalright Phantom Spirit 120 SE ARGB, Corsair Vengeance 2x 32GB 6000C30, RTX 4070, MSI MPG A850G, Fractal Design North, Samsung 990 Pro 2TB, Alienware AW3225QF (32" 240 Hz OLED)
Productivity system: i9-7980XE, Asus X299 TUF mark 2, Noctua D15, 64GB ram (mixed), RTX 3070, NZXT E850, GameMax Abyss, Samsung 980 Pro 2TB, iiyama ProLite XU2793QSU-B6 (27" 1440p 100 Hz)

If you are using offset voltage and a AVX offset, when you hit an AVX load, the clock should automatically be lowered which will in turn lower the voltage.

In your case it sounds like offset voltage with a 4.8GHz overclock and a -500 AVX offset would work well.  This is the same thing I am running 24/7.

I never really ran any direct comparison after delidding, so I decided to do one.  Silicon Lottery turnaround was 1 day and the chip looks completely stock.

Before:

4.7GHz @ 1.234v - Realbench 2hr run gave a max temp of 81c.

ACEMTo8.png

After:

4.7GHz @ 1.237v - Realbench 2hr run gave a max temp of 70c....an 11c loss.

SHpJzBN.jpg

The extra headroom let me move to this as my 24/7 overclock.  4.8GHz @ 1.285v - Realbench 2hr run gave a max temp of 81c.

This is pretty surprising. Look at the difference lowering mesh voltage by .033v (still at 3200MHz) and turning down LLC one notch made in temps. All other setting are the same. As you can see, the core voltage is unchanged, and comparing the average and peak watts, they are almost identical ~1% lower. But look at those temps! Max and average both dropped by 7c. I really did not think the mesh voltage affected temps this much.

Before lowering LLC and Mesh...

Haha...I like to think this thread has been a good representation of what a 7820x is capable of, and also that it can be very effectively cooled with a AIO cooler.  Plus...It is simply the fastest 8 core processor in the world.
