RGB RAM Worth it?

Hi everyone, I need to buy a 16GB DDR4 RAM for my computer, I was thinking on going with the Trident Z RGB, but just want to know if that's worth it, or should I go with another set of RAM and save some money?

RGB boosts performance by dank%, so you choose :)

do you want to change the theme of your build easily? Then yes. Otherwise, no. Looking at your build, you haven't included any other rgb components, so eh.

If you have a nice dark tempered glass side panel (which you do), it should look really nice. Though for a question of such importance, we must ask @Damascus (he is the king of RGBistan after all. I'm just the ambassador).

Well, I was wondering 2 things actually.

  1. Is there a way to make the Phanteks Evolv TG RGB strips have effects? Or do I need to get something like the Hue+?
  2. Can I sync the RAM with the Case RGB?

1&2. Check for Aura compatibility, since you're running an Asus board. You can get some really clean effects quite easily.

And Phanteks makes an RGB adapter for mobo headers. Just look it up on Newegg, its around $5-6 US.

it does, you just have to buy the adapter sold by phanteks. tweet/msg their customer support if you want to be sure.

I'm chatting with them right now, but on the list on their website I only see the Z170 Pro Gaming/Aura, mine is just Z170 Pro.

Edit: They confirmed, my motherboard does not work with Aura. So would I need to get something like the Hue+ for the Case RGB effects?

If you have asus aura the trident z rgb will sync.  Otherwise you need to use its own seperate program.

Want to custom loop?  Ask me more if you are curious

Typically, the lighting / RGB kits are priced similar to the non-RGB higher spec'd (e.g. high frequency + low timings) DRAM kits.

If you are looking at those said memory kits, then I'd say spend the extra $0 ~ $20, and get the RGB / LED variant.

It really depends.

For an example, with my scenario...

Spoiler

When I first built my X99 system, I grabbed a G.Skill TridentZ DDR4-3000 CAS 14 kit.

More specifically, THIS set: https://www.gskill.com/en/product/f4-3000c14d-16gtz

Unfortunately, this kit got discontinued.

G.Skill took this kit, and added RGB to it, and renamed it to TridentZ RGB.

https://www.gskill.com/en/product/f4-3000c14d-16gtzr

If I want to upgrade my RAM, and wish to have all the RAM to run at the same frequency and timings, I will most likely need to get the RGB kit.

Thanks for the info, I'll probably get the RGB, which speed should I get? Is it a real difference between the 3000 and 3200? Worth the $20? What's the best speed/money ratio?

Get the 3200, it is kind of "standard" speed nowadays.

These RGB RAM looks very nice if you want to show off your fancy gaming PC having RGB fans, RGB coolers, RGB motherboard and other RGB stuff.

Thankfully I got it right before the price surge, I wouldn't get it at this moment, maybe after price goes down again. But yeah, it helps with your color scheme.

Yes RGB RAM is worth it if you have no budget issues and want to build a high-end gaming PC having lots of eye candy and showing off to others.
