Will 3GB Cards Still Mine Ether?

Go to solution Solved by Lurick,

If I remember right you'll need either 4GB, 6GB or 8GB cards. I don't think 3GB cards will cut it.

Since the 660Ti is Nvidia though, you're better off mining Zcash with the NiceHash miner program.

I heard that video cards with 2 gb of vram no longer work with mining ether. I was wondering if the mining procedure will only work with 4gb cards, or if 3gb cards will still mine. I don't really care if mining is very profitable with a 3gb card or not. I have a 660ti lying around, and power is very cheap in my area, just wanted to know if it works.

Thanks in advance!

Nope. mining apps check vram and will only work on 4+ gig cards (4, 6, 8, 11, 12, etc.)

Right now, about 2.3-2.5 GB of video card memory is used by the mining software ... soon due to the way the currency works and as mining difficulty increases there's going to be a point where the size of that file stored in video card's memory will go up and may get very close or over 3 GB.

But it doesn't have to be very close to 3 GB to make it basically impossible to use 3 GB cards... right now i think you can still use 3 gb cards with some hacks or tweaking of the mining software, but i'm not sure it's worth it.

Within 3 months, nope. The DAG file will be over 3GB by that point.
