PSU question for mining

Looking into building a dedicated mining rig but was wondering what kind of psu i would need for 5 970's in one rig, 1000? 1200? what kind of numbers are we talking

I would go with "don't do it" by Sea[riously]sonic.

Spoiler

850W should be enough, but 1000W would keep it safer. I'd recommend going rackmount, if you can, with 1000W redundant PSU's.

At this point, I'd seriously consider the Se[riously]sonic.

To not do it. Geforce doesn't have the mining power that Radeon has and you might be wasting more power than the coins are worth.

It's up to you. You'd best be served by going to a calculator and getting a rough estimate.

I'll just chime in here. I don't know much about mining, but everything I've heard (even on WAN Show) indicates to me that Radeon cards are better for mining.

Main System: Phobos

AMD Ryzen 7 2700 (8C/16T), ASRock B450 Steel Legend, 16GB G.SKILL Aegis DDR4 3000MHz, AMD Radeon RX 570 4GB (XFX), 960GB Crucial M500, 2TB Seagate BarraCuda, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations/macOS Catalina

Secondary System: York

Intel Core i7-2600 (4C/8T), ASUS P8Z68-V/GEN3, 16GB GEIL Enhance Corsa DDR3 1600MHz, Zotac GeForce GTX 550 Ti 1GB, 240GB ADATA Ultimate SU650, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations

Older File Server: Yet to be named

Intel Pentium 4 HT (1C/2T), Intel D865GBF, 3GB DDR 400MHz, ATI Radeon HD 4650 1GB (HIS), 80GB WD Caviar, 320GB Hitachi Deskstar, Windows XP Pro SP3, Windows Server 2003 R2

better yes, but nvidia isnt bad, its like an old car vs new for gas mileage, if you have the old one it works great but its helps to have the efficient one, in the current time amd cards are jacked up in price so im going nvidia

970 will use up to 180 watts.  Assume maybe around 160 watts per card, of which maybe 20-50 watts would be from the pci-e slot.

Be careful how you power so many cards from the motherboard, you may overload the 24 pin atx connector with so many cards. (unless you're using pci-e extender cables with their own molex power connector so you won't take power from slots)

So basically 5 x 180 watts = 900 watts ... 100 watts for mb+cpu+ram ... i'd go for a 1050-1200w power supply just to be safe.

A GTX 1080 can make roughly $6 a day on Zcash right now. THat seems pretty good to me. Not quite what you could do with an AMD card but not bad.
