What is the main difference between just normal Kaby Lake?

Kaby Lake X makes no sense for the normal person... but given that it will overclock quite a bit better and the CPU's themselves will most likely cost the same as normal Kaby Lake, it makes more sense to buy in to X299 instead of Z270 if you were planning on getting a premium motherboard for your gaming rig anyways.

Same reason a gamer would buy into Skylake instead of Broadwell-E. It's cheaper and performs better in games. Even now it still makes sense for some people to get Kaby Lake instead of Ryzen despite a 7700k being more expensive than a 1700.

Actually the X is reserved to Skylake-X:

it is 7740k just to break the logic of reserving X for the HEDT because Intel name scheming.

No. Just fucking no.

 

You're paying like $400 of a mid level MOBO, that MOST if not like 75% of the features WILL NOT work on... It does not make sense to buy anything(consumer) from intel except a 7700k or g4560 right now.

A Z270 SOC costs $250. A X299 SOC will most likely cost $300. The X299 version will have significantly better memory overclocking, a better Vcore VRM, better audio, more storage, and better IO. If the Gigabyte Gaming 3 sells for $200 and the GamersNexus preview is correct, it'll be significantly better even in a partially-disabled state than any Z270 board for $200.

 

It all comes down to motherboard pricing. If entry level and midrange X299 boards are reasonably priced, midrange and premium Z270 builds no longer make sense.

I think they're going with X even on the KBL-X parts.

I have seen a lot of those intel charts where the kaby lake has K's also if you search through google you'll find a bit more of those with k than x... frankly it is a mess as it is right now, suppose we'll only truly know when times comes lol

Kaby Lake X is Intel attempting to get you to buy in to them bringing server style upgrade price gouging to the consumer space. Don't do it. Do not reward the evil.
