I see where your coming with because back with the old Mac Pro you could swap graphic cards but only some were supported.

cool, kinda jelly cause i wished they did this back in 2012 with TB2 which was one of the main reason i bought my MBP back then combined with the announcement of GUS by MSI during the CES of the same year (which got later shut down by intel cause they didn't want people to use TB2 or 1 for eGPU stuff), then came Village Instruments who was going to release a TB based solution but also got cock blocked by intel at every turn ending with basically a eGPU that uses PCMCIA and comes with a Sonnet PCMCIA to TB2 adaptor, performance would still have been better than the 650M in my MacBook but got turned when looking at the price of the Sonnet adaptor.  Oh well, so goes life, built my desktop  last year so i'm out of that market anyway now (also out of the Mac market despite my profound love for MacOS). 

One day I will be able to play Monster Hunter Frontier in French/Italian/English on my PC, it's just a matter of time... 4 5 6 7 8 9 years later: It's finally coming!!!

Man... i wish i can somehow use an external gpu with my late 2013 RMBP. i basically have no real use with these two TB2 port unless I can hook up an external gpu and use it for rendering acceleration.

Thunderbolt 3 bottlenecks a GTX 1080 and up, in any GPU intensive task. Seeing as Volta will bring a more mid tier GPU packing the same power of the 1080 (if they don't release an x70 that is as powerful as the preceeding x80Ti again), eGPUs won't gain much traction if systems can do better with dGPUs whilst costing less.

Why is support for external GPUs such a revelation? Windows and Linux have supported them for ages. And even on MacOS they already worked as long as you worked around Apple.

 

And on that note what is with the new iMac Pro... like seriously... This is a high end professional product with a Xeon CPU, Workstation GPU, and ECC memory and your infographic for it highlights that "OMG! It has a 1080p FaceTime webcam! No way! And I can VESA mount it? Cool! Oh and a UHS-II SDXC card slot? I never expected that I'd get what equates to a $30 accessory built in for the low price of $5000!"

 

Don't get me wrong, the iMac Pro looks like a positive direction for workstation use, but it seems Apple's gotten their marketing for it a bit confused >.> If the card slot wasn't UHS-II I'd seriously question them. VESA mounts are cool and all but why is that a feature you save for your pro system? And a webcam? Because when I buy a big expensive workstation system the webcam is my top priority.

 

30 bit color? That's useful for workstation. 10Gbit Ethernet? That's useful for workstation. Up to 4 SSDs with raid support? That's useful for workstation. So why are these features hidden in dark grey text in the background.

Thanks for clarifying on the enclosure; I hadn't realized, nor have I look at external GPUs in earnest since giving up on the idea for myself awhile back.

In order to buy the enclosure you must be an apple dev which costs 100 dollars a year i believe. You must also own a mac to be a dev. those things aside this is still a cheap box. Yes i understand sonnet makes their own boxes as well. We've seen multiple tests that say the razer core and similar thunderbolt enclosures bottleneck the gpu only by 15%. Yes you can build a PC for cheaper without the bottleneck but with apple giving official support for external graphics other manufacturers will follow in their path. Companies like dell aren't up at night worried about razer, but they certainly care about what apple is doing.  

 

Can we please stop pretending that windows 10 isn't a gross operating system. I use it, its inconsistent and crashes.

Did you just compare a desktop PC with a laptop. If you did you pretty much lost all your credibility here if you actually think the rest of the market does it differently. 

If you were comparing it with the iMac Pro, you just linked a normal mid tier desktop while iMac Pro has Workstation grade hardware

No, you can't. You can't put in the exact same specs and magically make it cost 3500. AMD cannot even be in the equation because they don't support TB3 as of yet which has huge potential in the future

What? A huge touchscreen isn't very costly, to begin with. The top end model of studio does not come cheaper than the macbook, and you also have to consider that you're comparing a desktop with laptop, which isn't really fare in the first place.

Surface Book has a very weak GPU and it has alot of it's own problems (and lack of TB).

Check your facts. Asus officially supports it, Dell supports it through 3rd party accessories, and even HP is making a dock now. Any thunderbolt 3 device with an up-to-date bios with thunderbolt 3 hot plug support works with the various docks and a lot of major vendors are supporting it at this point.

If Apple went out of their way to not allow Thunderbolt 3 graphics it would be a bigger deal then "Oh yeah, this works and we made a nice GUI to handle it for you."

 

As far as the argument about the iMac Pro I'll drop it because as mentioned in the earlier reply to my comment it *is* off topic for this thread.

Check your facts. Asus officially supports it, Dell supports it through 3rd party accessories, and even HP is making a dock now. Any thunderbolt 3 device with an up-to-date bios with thunderbolt 3 hot plug support works with the various docks and a lot of major vendors are supporting it at this point.

All these manufacturers you mentioned above supports their own docks. Dell's Alienware has a proprietary thing going on. For Dell XPS, which I've personally looked into, you have to do some kind of modifications and it's not very stable experience.

It's not plug and play like the Razer blade

Never mentioned anything about TB2. Besides, there would've been throttling due to lack of bandwidth

Higher the resolution and higher the touch responsiveness means a more expensive screen. Thats what the surface has. Resolution makes tluch screens exponentially more expensive. 

 

Im also comparing to the macbook, not sure where you got desktop. 

 

Build quality isnt. Im an IT admin now, was a repair tech before, and own a few macbooks myself (second hand).  I know the build quality first hand and the many issues they have over time. 

 

1800$ comes from earlier in the thread where i showed a higher spec'd 15" dell vs the top end macbook. It was 1800$ cheaper. So for the sake of that aregument you were paying 1800$ for a unibody case.

2736x1824 at 267 PPI, with the same aspect ratio of 3:2 and 10-point multi-touch. For the pro 4

Ok, the touch screen is cool, but the macbook is no slouch with a 226ppi screen and a 16:10 aspect ration. Not to mention the p3 color gammat and the almost perfect out of the box color accuracy.

Yes, which in the case of Asus and HP are thunderbolt 3 docks (Asus also has a proprietary connector for their gaming laptops but supports both), and in terms of Dell's recommended solution for computers other than Alienware are also thunderbolt 3 solutions.

It's not plug and play on the Razer Blade either. You need  up to date TB3 firmware, up to date igpu drivers, and Razer synapse.

 

If have a newer Dell XPS with an up-to-date bios, up to date TB3 firmware, Razer synapse, and the Razer GPU switcher it works exactly the same other than needing to reboot between GPU switches (because Windows 10 Home and Pro do not currently support PCIe hotplugging natively for GPUs).

 No you just mentioned Thunderbolt, no version. There were a number of Thunderbolt 2 eGPUs and enclosures for previous generation MacBooks.

That from an OS perspective a GPU plugged into a TB3 port is no different from a GPU plugged into any other PCIe lanes if it's initialized before boot. For hotplugging to work your OS would need to support it, but for it to work from a clean boot, as long as you have the proper drivers, firmware, and BIOS it should "Just Work™".
