Hey guys! I have a Asus ROG GL552VW and I'm interested in updating my monitor to a higher refresh rate. Either 120hz or 144hz. I've been getting mixed reviews and I'm that hdmi 2.0 can do 144hz at 1080 and 1.4a can supposedly do 120hz at 1080p. I need to know if I could even do an hdmi to dvi situation. I would prefer to have a 144hz monitor but won't waste my money if I can only use 120hz

They can both do 1080p 144 Hz, but the monitor also has to support it. The ViewSonic XG2401 supports 1080p 144 Hz over HDMI 1.4a. I don't know of any 1080p 144 Hz monitors that use HDMI 2.0.

I don't suppose you have a 4K monitor laying around you can test the connector with?

HDMI 1.4 only has enough bandwidth to support 1080p 120Hz, 2.0 has enough for 144Hz.

But I have to be honest, I have never actually used HDMI for high refresh panels and don't know if this officially supported.

Also figure out what GPU the HDMI port is coming out of. Most laptops I've dealt with a discrete and an integrated GPU usually route the HDMI port to the integrated one.

A quick and dirty of way of checking is plugging a monitor in the HDMI port, making it the primary display, and run a game. Games will usually run on the primary display.

This is great to hear. Do you know if the AOC G2460PQU supports hdmi 1.4?

There aren't really any monitors sold today with lower than HDMI 1.4. However not all monitors will be capable of 144 Hz over HDMI, even if they are 144 Hz monitors and they have HDMI 1.4.

How can you tell whether or not it will work?

You can't really, you have to test it. Most monitors don't support it. The XG2401 is the only one I've tested personally that works.

Awesome, one last question. Will the XG2041 allow 144hz at 1080p or will I have to drop down to 720? PS Thanks a lot for all your help
