2k or 240hz

TubbyHardLard

My friend and I are arguing with each other about which is needed more "240hz or 1440p" on a monitor. What do you guys think we are both gamers?

I was telling him that 240hz is impossible to see the difference compared to 144hz and said to him just get a 2k monitor with 144hz, but he said you can't see the difference between 1080p and 2k and said to get a 240hz 1080p monitor.

It's not impossible to see the difference. It depends largely on the person, what you're doing, etc.

Saying it's impossible is like a person who's colorblind saying that blue doesn't exist. Just because you don't see it, doesn't mean others can't. ;)

Personally I'd go with the higher resolution, but I like the idea of a prettier picture and being able to see more of my spreadsheets.

2k is a cinematic size which is 1080p but just slightly wider. I believe you are thinking of quad hd (QHD) for 1440p

Desktop: Cooler Master MasterCase 5 | i7 6700k @4.7GHz 1.3v | Custom EKWB soft-tubing loop (CPU + GPU) (2x 240mm Alphacool rads)| Zotac GTX 1080 Founder Edition | Asus Maximus VIII Hero Motherboard | Samsung 850 EVO 512GB SSD | 4TB Seagate HDD | 2TB Seagate HDD | EVGA SuperNova G2 750 | Acer Predator XB271HK | https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/xzjRHN

Depends, are you the type of gamer who turns down the settings in his game as low as they can go to get the best possible performance, or the kind to turn up the settings as far as you can while staying above a certain threshold (such as 60 or 100 fps). If both, depending on the game, decide by how many and how often you play those respective kinds of games. Or, if you have money, get both, and switch between which monitor you game on depending on the game. Or, compromise and get a 165hz 1440p display.

Also seeing the difference between 1440p and 1080p is much easier than seeing the difference between 144/165/240hz (at least in my experience), especially after you've spent about 10 minutes with any of the previous refresh rates, you'll be hard-pressed to say, "Man, this 165hz monitor is nice, but it would feel a lot smoother at 240..."

Though I'm currently in-between computers, so, for now, I play at 720p60 on my low-end APU machine ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

that was just in reply to your opening statement where you talk about 1440p then go on about 2k vs 240hz, but 2k is a very rare resolution and is a different resolution to 1440p.

any way as a rule of thumb high refresh rate (if obtainable) is good for fast paced games such as competitive FPS, ideally it would be good to get a monitor with a sync option (gsync or free sync) to aid game smoothness.

i have a 4K monitor which when I can run a game at 4K it looks fantastic but where I struggle to get that I drop down to 1440p and found that I can definitely tell a difference if I drop down further to 1080p

For 27inch 144hz Dell or Acer is what I'd go with. Specifically the Acer predator 1440p 144hz monitor they have a few to pic from. Or if you don't want 144hz Acer makes a nice 60hz gsync 4k monitor as well I believe it's called the XB281HK.

so what that picture shows is that if the first set of numbers is above 2 thousand then it is considered 2k, but is 1080p or 1440p just pixel density or something?

https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/691408-2k-does-not-mean-2560×1440/

1080p and 1440p are naming conventions based on vertical pixel count, 2K and 4K are naming conventions based on horizontal pixel count.

1920×1080 is 1080p, and is also a 2K resolution, depending on which naming convention you prefer.

2560×1440 is 1440p, and is also a 2.5K resolution

I personally prefer resolution over refresh rate, though some may +be able to see the difference between it. That said, 144hz is still very fast, 1440p just makes it better.

  1. 1440p is NOT the same 2K.  It's 2.5K.
  2. You need an pretty powerful system (at least a GTX 1070) if you want to reach anywhere near 240fps on a modern game, unless you play at minimum settings.

Make sure to quote or tag me (@JoostinOnline) or I won't see your response!
