Are SSD's worthwhile?

For someone that doesn't mind the longer boot times and likes to save money I want to hear everyone else's reason for liking SSD's so much (or don't), and if so why?

It isn't just necessarily boot times, but I'd argue the super fast boot time is already enough to justify the cost. Everything feels faster and more responsive. File transferring is faster, programs and games (on the SSD) open and load faster, and those start-up applications aren't going to be slowing down your computer for 5 minutes after booting up. It's amazing.

Maybe in your country, but the average price has HUGELY dropped to the point we are replacing clients laptops with SSD's when the harddrive fails, it uses to be way to expensive to even suggest it as an option. 

 

@OP It makes a huge difference, you won't believe how much time a computer sits at 100% disk usage doing normal basic things (Epecially on 5200rpm drives) 

 

But Agree with zMeul dont go for anything lower than 240 unless you have more than 1 (I have 128 for Windows, 1x 240 for games 1x 240 for more games)

ummm it is, as you are not taking the average wage into account... in South Africa (Where I lived) $85 is a lot of money

 

Now I live in New Zealand and $85 is actually very cheap with my salary for the same job I did in SA.

No i still have no SSD because it's just not worth the cost at all, i can still get 1-2TB HDD's for the cost of a "low price" SSD

HDD load up computer in around 5 - 7 mins to the point where you can click to go in things and not lagging.

SSD load up computer in around 10 secs to the point where you can click to go in things and not lagging.

This reason alone justify the prices to me.

PS. The prices of SSD is down by a lot compared to last time.

ok I'll try and go very slowly so you can keep up.. You said SSD's are still very expensive, no they are not they have dropped hugely in price making average consumers (not Gamers) start to use them in their PC's.

 

You than argued that just look at the price on newegg that is the same for anyone all over the world. 

 

I than proved that the newegg price does not prove this as the amount indicated can mean a lot depending on your country, hence maybe with your country SSD's are still expensive but to other countries they have become really cheap. 

 

I can go get my coloring books for you if you want, the kids might be done with them.

I replaced my laptop HDD with an SSD a month or so ago. I can't even begin to describe how much of a difference there is. Windows now boots in 10s and programs that used to take a minute or 2 to load now load in seconds. It was a little on the pricey side but worth it IMO.

My PC loads in under 2 minutes with a 7200RPM boot drive.

With Windows 10 fast boot it takes seconds even on a HDD, around 20 seconds.

Short answer - yes, if price is not an issue for you.

A small ssd (60-120GB) for your OS only is definitely worth the money.

Isuggest the M.2 over Sata if you have the option.

Definitely.

Shorter boot times, shorter application launch times or game loading screen times, faster file transfers, etc... All fantastic.

 

I'd highly recommend the Samsung 850 Evo SSD lineup, I have one in my desktop (256GB SATA), and one in my laptop (512GB M.2). No issues at all with either, they've both been very fast and very reliable.

Oh god yes. I had to use a 1TB Barracuda (which isn't a very slow drive) as a boot drive for a while instead of my 840 EVO and it was painful. Everything just seemed dopey and unwilling to do anything in a timely fashion.

If you've got the scratch, large cap SATA III SSDs are awesome pieces of tech. Depending on your chipset, a machine can go from off to fully booted in a few seconds (it's roughly 20 seconds on X99, and a good quality 7200RPM HDD can manage that on decent systems), and large programs can load significantly faster.

But what no one has mentioned yet is Page files/Swap files/Swap partitions. If your system needs a small bit of virtual memory, an SSD is lightyears ahead of HDDs.

There's also hybernation mode, it might cause unnecessary writes (higher end SSDs will last years even with this taken into consideration), but it saves your Windows session on the SSD, allowing you to power down machines whilst picking up where you left off when you power back on.

 

If you're being somewhat budget oriented, a 120-256GB SSD and a large cap HDD is also a good route, if you've got a mchine that accepts multiple drives. Use your SSD for your OS, and programs you use often, and the HDD for files you don't necessarily need that often. Not everything you do will benfit from the SSD, but what does, it's definitely noticable

I like the feedback that everyone has given, I just wanted to see how much the LTT community liked having a SSD. Don't get me wrong though, I've used them before, but since I'm much more into laptops over desktops the capacity is a must since I have EVERYTHING on my laptops. The extra cost doesn't seem worth it to me unless I can get a good capacity SSD for cheap. I can see the use of them in professional environments and people that have the need for speed, but idk I guess I can deal without them.
