Case clearance for CPU cooler

VaPaL
Go to solution Solved by Corsair Joseph,

We've never tested that cooler with our 400Q case so I can't tell you 100% sure it's going to fit or not, but that case will be able to handle a cooler with a height up to 170mm. That's from the boards PCB to the side panel.

I'm looking for a new case, the one I'm interested (Corsair 400Q) have a CPU cooler clearance of 170mm. The CPU I have now (Xigmatek Dark Knight II) have a height of 159mm, but I measured it, and from the MoBo PCB it has 175mm.

So, this is the correct way to measure? When case manufactures give the clearence the are considering the CPU height in it or only the cooler height?

My current case manufacturer does not give this info so I can't compared both cases specs.

Thanks in advance!

I normally trust the measurements that the manufacturers give but I've never heard of Xigmatek so... not sure. I would probably look up builds using the 400Q and compare the listed heights of the CPU coolers they use to yours.

It's not a popular brand but there's one Xigmatek case I really like, it's the Xigmatek Aquila

Nifty cooler! Reminds me of the Enermax ETS T40f

You should be good. That cooler doesnt look 170+mm tall, not with only a 120mm fan

I have one of xigmatecs cpu coolers of the same size and I didn't check for height clearance before purchasing my rig. As a result my cooler is touching my side panel slightly. It's also 10mm larger than the maximum heatsink height for my case according to the case maker so you should be fine with thier measurements. But it also seems like, if one measures to the pcb my height is a bit larger. If there's more than 135-140cm of clearence above the io sheild you should be fine. That's my distance between where the io shield ends and my case panel begins.

@Spork829 the biggest cooler I saw until now is the NH U14S, which is pretty much the same case as my cooler (has a fan bigger than the heatsink). It's height with the fan is 165mm. So I guess my cooler might fit.

@TVwazhere Mine came with a 140mm fan, it's a little bigger than the heatsink.

@KazerTheKeen I was thinking the same, but I was unsure from were the clearence is measured, from the PCB ou the top of the CPU (meaning the height of the cooler) but I guess the later makes more sence and it's more practical :)

@Corsair Joseph Thanks for the reply! I'll measure again, more carefully. If anything, I'll got with it's bigger brother 600Q :)

No problem at all :)

600Q is a pretty solid case too!
