Well. It's Solid State storage with no moving components. It uses a technology similar to thumb drives and allows for the storage of data on memory chips with the difference being it is setup to allow for the reading and writing of data at much higher speeds than a conventional spinning platter. It also uses a fraction of the power. With no moving components they can be dropped on the floor and survive more frequently because they're less susceptible to physical shock. They're physically lighter.

A downside is they cost much more per GB but since they first came out the cost has gone down quite a bit.

And I've got one of these in my MacBook Pro, and it runs super smooth, no reliability issues so far. It's made by Crucial, which is another good SSD brand. You can also look at Kingston drives, preferably a HyperX (faster than the other models).

Also, they are much more dependable than USB flash drives. Just had to say that because some people have asked if they can run Windows on a flash drive. You can, but I wouldn't recommend running your main OS on one, as they can be finicky.

Don't get an NVMe SSD, as they do not improve general performance appreciably for the cost. You can usually get a SATA SSD that has twice the space for the same price of an NVMe SSD. Also Windows 7 doesn't natively support NVMe, so there's that.

In any case, if money is no object, Samsung's SSDs are a great place to look. Otherwise if you're tighter on cash, Crucial would be my next pick.

Kingston (except for one model, I can't remember it) or SanDisk are also alright.

Over time memory cells in SSD's start to degrade and lose their usability. This causes the overall usable voluble of the drive to decrease. I would assume aggressively using a USB constantly as a boot drive would degrade the volume quickly as the USB isn't really designed to be a daily OS drive and inevitably it'd stop working. Not to mention insufficient cooling. It'd be like reading and writing to the drive constantly for the entire session which could be for hours and a USB isn't really meant for constant non-stop reads and write. Plus the build up of heat in the USB's enclosure would shorten its lifespan if it runs hot.

If you have no budget then https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01LXS4TY6/ref=dp_cerb_2

We use them in our engineering computers at work. If you are looking for those 8s boot times that's the way to go. MX300 isn't bad either I run one in my personal rig at home but I can honestly say the 960 is better and I wish I would've paid the extra $$ and got it.

Will this do the job?

If you are using an HDD you will notice a difference using a 2.5 SSD but if your motherboard is compatible with M.2 SSDs I recommend the one I linked you with up to 3200MBs Reads and 1900MBs writes. Most 2.5 SSDs are around 500MBs read and write.
