1Km Wi-Fi range in the forest

Mathieu Godin

Hello, I am looking to place a wireless bridge between two houses, but the problem is that there is no straight view between the two house because of trees. Also, the two houses are not on the same level. One is slightly higher than the other.

The best example of what I am looking for is this video from LTT.

Here is the information I can give.

-The distance is between 1 and 2 km.

-It's right inside a Canadian forest. So there is a lot of threes.

-No direct view between the two houses.

-A budget of 400$ can.

Discloser: I am a programmer, I do not know anything about networking. Maybe it is not possible.

You need direct line of sight for such long range applications, or a large number of relay points within direct line of sight of each other. The first may not be possible and the second will cost more than $400.

Basically, for $400, it's not going to be possible.

I don't think you can do it without line of sight, or a couple of trees in between tops. Since wi-fi operates at 2.4 GHz or 5.8 GHz, the signal degradation is pretty bad with any obstacles.

Would you be able to get line of sight if you mounted the hardware on the rooftops of the two houses?

You will not be able to do this without having a tower to get above the trees for line of sight.
