Either one would be fantastic options just depends on your budget and what resolution you want to be able to play at.

Seriously, OP, either one of those would be a fine choice to pair with a 4790. I've got an MSI 1070 with my 4790K and love it to death.

NOT REALLY. THAT WAS ONLY THROUGH MICROCENTER AND DIDN'T HOLD. THE 1080 IS ALREADY DOWN TO 500US, WE MIGHT SEE A PRICE DROP ON THE 1070 THOUGH.

No, they didn't. Intel's prices are still the same. Or if there was a drop in MSRP, not by much.

What they did do was make Intel release products that now make more sense.

intel can't change the cpu prices much because its very easy to start eating their xeon line profits

No, even AMD's work horse Doom 2016 put the top Vega over the 1080 by 10%. Then remember that a 580 OCed matches a stock 980ti and you see the problem, and why AMD uses Doom like a rented mule.

last year in January Polaris was running at 800 mhz remember? add yearly drivers to that, vega is going to be faster than what we seen,

plus vulkan already said they are going to support fp16 which by it self can bring huge gains

Naw, they were neck and neck with the 1080 at CES, now they've pulled ahead likely due to that clock speed. AMD has let things leak over the past few days. You're going to have a situation much like the 580 and 1060, Vega and the 1080 will trade blows, nothing like 1080ti performance. The 1080ti is the fastest ti in history, not in it's speed but disparity between architectures for that singular purpose. Raise the bar higher than AMD can reach. Nvidia made sure not to have another Fury X.

rx 480 vs 1060 the 480 is just 16% bigger in die size, vega is 500-530mm^2 1080 is 314mm^2 unless amd forgot how to make gpus its going to be faster than that :-|

Remember, AMD scales for shit when you look at die size. Always have. Nvidia is really no better, they just have developer support. Doom is proof of that. API has nothing to do with it, that's a bedtime story for fans.

But I digress.

A 1080 has nothing to fear from Vega. Just like Vega has nothing to fear from the 1080, given the price stays the same for both. Only reason to wait for Vega is if you have that luxury. Then hell yeah wait.

the fury x is around the same size as the 980 ti die, with the addition of tiled based rendering, better scheduler, improved memory controller and 50 % higher frequency compared to the fury x, it will be a great and powerful card. (the fury had problems with its memory controller as overclocking it would give a good perf increase which shouldn't happen)
