Come to think of it, we could see this technology being implemented into GPUs to not only provide cable free CAR & AR, but to also provide a wireless connection to a monitor, I can see this being done, and then being implemented into some sort of FreeSync 3 standard, whether they still call it FreeSync I don't know, seeing as it would cover variable refresh rate, HDR and wireless display I can see its name evolving.

AMD should be fine with small acquisition for now, they only have about 1B$ in debt, and they have about the same in cash, and Ryzen just got released and it's doing very well.

and 60Ghz is good enough for what AMD wants to do, they want to create a standalone VR Headset, with display and compute on board, so they are not really very concerned with cables coming from the PC, the distance of the wireless is much shorter than that.

from the VR headset they showed last year, i forgot the name, had everything on the headset, even with 35watt TDP, draw back would be weight and heat, so my guess they will make the headset display only, then the compute could be moved to a small block you put on your arm or waist.

so a new gen APU with 15/25watt, should be much more managable, and a wireless would go a long way to solving their problems, still 1 issue remains, how good is latency ?

Do you mean optical as in visible light? 

Because technically both this and visible light are part of the electromagnetic spectrum, and are thus light.

I'm mostly talking about infrared communication (like an old school remote controller for your tv).

Well the problem would most likely be interference. Literally everything produces infrared radiation in some shape or form. Sure, you'd theoretically get faster transfer rates thanks to IR's higher frequency, but that doesn't mean anything when you have to spend half the time error correcting the signal, plus the fact you need to be right in line with the receiver (just like those IR remotes)

we cannot say about Vega. Ryzen looks like an obvious success, they are competitive with Intel. But you cannot judge based on this acquisition apart from the fact that AMD is not going bankrupt (which we already know).

 

Remember this is not some massive acquisition like Facebook buying oculus. I doubt AMD had to dig deep into their pockets to buy these guys...

I dont really see why you would need a big battery pack for this. Its a small screen are a wireless module strapped to your head. All the compute power is being done elsewhere...
