Help me identify this keyboard

kaiju_wars

So I found this Gateway 2000 keyboard at work.  It feels like a mechanical keyboard (for the most part) has the noise of one, and the key switches look to be compatible with Cherry MX keycaps.  Also, the sticker on the back says Maxi Switches.

I'm adding images for reference.

Did I just snag a mechanical keyboard from work for free?

I think they're Topre switches from those round stems.

I'm fairly sure that I'm like 200% wrong. Too lazy to look it up.

Well old keyboard are mostly mechanical. :D

I would say "yes" but as with the age (even though it plays little to no factor) and the company and cheapness of it, it may very well be but even if it is a true mechanical keyboard it's most likely not great overall

Yes for the most part, but you would be surprised, there are some pretty good membrane keyboards out there

Quote

The AnyKey uses rubber dome type keyswitches, with all the switches and contact points on a single sheet. The keyswitch layer contacts a single flexible membrane that detects all keypresses and directs them to the controller board via a pair of flexible edge connectors. While the AnyKey is branded as a Gateway product, the membrane layer clearly bears the inscription “Maxi Switch Inc,” revealing the true maker of the hardware.

IDK something about the old Alps Dell QuietKey keyboards feels super fuckin dank. I'd love to get my hands on a like new one, but I guess my new-old stock membrane model does the trick just fine.

Yeah it came with a Win95 IBM Machine my dad bought me when I was a little kid yet pretty much, the keyboard is all I have left from that system, I kept it in good care as that was the start of my love for PCs [:

You guys make me feel crap. I'm using the Logitech K120, and I felt a IBM keyboard when I went into a thrift shop once. I didn't know anything about vintage computers at that time...

It's okay, the keyboard at the desk I use at work has a K120 on it.  They ain't bad for non mechanical keyboards.

99% of old keyboards are mechanical, but they're the shit mechanical switches.  I forgot what they switches are called, but they're awful.  They could be buckling spring switches.
