Starting to give some serious thought to a Ryzen upgrade - The more I read, the more positive information I am finding post its pretty shitty launch (not unexpected for new platform). Now a little history. When I made my sig build I upgraded from a Z77 + 3770k build which had a damaged memory controller from a delidd. I sold it on (buyer fully aware and happy as it still worked single channel)  and wanted to get a 5820k build, to which everyone said "no no, unless you're video editing anything but an i5 is overkill" - I bought a 4790k, sort of heeded their advice but went with some gut-instinct, i'm glad I did. So roll on 2.5 years I have a pretty damn sweet gaming build, but i'm still wanting that big multi core build. No I don't video edit, but I look at some of these reviews and minimums in gaming are pretty sweet. The reason i'm itching now is a quick trawl through ebay see's me netting around £400 - £500 for my CPU, Ram (32gb) and Motherboard which wouldn't leave me much of a jump for :

CPU: AMD RYZEN 7 1700 3.0GHz 8-Core Processor  (£304.90 @ Alza)
Motherboard: MSI X370 GAMING PRO CARBON ATX AM4 Motherboard  (£158.10 @ CCL Computers)
Memory: G.Skill TridentZ RGB 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-3600 Memory  (£195.98 @ YoYoTech)
Total: £658.98

will you see any real world change in gaming performance? meh. will the extra cores boost your e-peen? awwyiss!

if you can live with halving your RAM capacity i don;t really see any downsides to this. also, the prices of your haswell setup are just going to keep dropping now, as it is an aging platform.

For video editing and rendering my brother and I's 1800x new rig sweeps the floor with the old 3770 one, and it games fine enough... but you want a gaming rig... I say wait for Skylake-X and hope Intel will price more competitively due to Ryzen.

i would go for it, it really depends on the person. personally i love having more cores for running bunch of programs without slowdown. in my experience wife's 1800x is making the same progression my x99 system did when i got it, updates should solve all the problems. if you do want a good upgrade a 1700 will be fine just get a good mobo. the one we bought is Asus PRIME X370-PRO ATX AM4 Motherboard, it did have problem for the first few days but now it seems to settle down.

- Prime has Ti Nexfets

- People are getting more luck with cas 14 3200Mhz ram. They're looking out for single rank, samsung b die sticks(whateva that means)

i5 2400 | ASUS RTX 4090 TUF OC | Seasonic 1200W Prime Gold | WD Green 120gb | WD Blue 1tb | some ram | a random case

The reason I opted for 3600mhz was Ive seen videos showing how the gaming performance increased by quite a whack at 3600mhz, maybe he got lucky with board and ram choices

It could be viewed as that, but games are showing a tendency towards more cores (I have a thread about it in my sig)

The prices are what are driving me towards this, half the ram will be a kick in the balls (not that I use it so much now with the 1080 - old 970 sli caused low memory crashes at 4k with 16gb - long story but 32gb solved it)

still sat on the fence, not too keen an the Asus Prime, I have quite a nice looking rig and wanna compliment it really - I haven't seen many flattering pictures of the prime.

This could be a good idea, but seen as Intel haven't really adjusted the X99 prices thus far, I wouldn't expect them to low ball with Skylake X

TL:DR - still unsure xD

as i said it depends on the person but i highly suggest going for something that works. i am not sure about other ryzen mobo but in my experience, i was impressed how well the prime mobo worked( i expected lots of crash and instability).

it will be years until game devs actually get their heads out of their collective asses and start to properly use multicore CPUs

tendency towards something, doesn't mean a concrete shift

we went multicore since 2005 - 12y later we still have games that can barely and properly utilize multi-core CPUs

gaming is still core clock and IPC dependent

you have money to burn? no one is stopping you

Then you'd want the 3600mhz cas 16 model

Though "upgrading" to the 1700 wouldn't give you a performance improvement. Just gives you more power to run stuff in the back ground.

I mean, I can afk in a crowded area in my mmo while playing overwatch. 0 frame dips.

Ye I guess, I may just wait another tick/tock and see what pops up then. As I said and @RollinLower stated, the price of my rig is going to start to drop soon which was my reasoning.

No I don't have money to burn, if I did I wouldn't have made this post. Most games use multi-core now, its only really Korean/Japanese FTP mmos (in my experience) that still want pure IPC and speed. It has been slow agreed, but the last 12 months has seen quite an uptake in comparison to previous years:

This an average of like 12 - 15 games showing how cores affected FPS - the site is german, I stole it from a thread over at overclock.net

It wasn't so much what I would gain now, it was the falling value of my current stuff and this bit I wanted to discuss about games using cores, and over the last 12 months it has become more of a trend - were already telling people to use i7's for gaming over i5 within budget

I'm sorry to tell you this, but whatever your purchase it will be obsolete the moment you power it

right as we speak Intel has plans to launch a new platform and new CPUs with that platform; they also have plans to shift to a new process node

spend your money wisely and buy only if it makes sense - don't buy on a whim

Yes, but we don't know how much Ryzen's CCXs will hurt performance in multithreaded games....

Yes, but very few games use more than 8 threads. Most games can use up to 8 threads right now.

  1. Most of the games that he tested are multithreaded
  2. His GTA V results are weird

Anyway, I am looking forward to the Hardware Unboxed video. Their benchmarks are very reliable and their video will be uploaded next week :D
