GTX 1070 vs future rx 570/580

metrocsgo

So  I found a deal on a gtx 1070 which i'm highly considering, but my brother (an amd fanboy) keeps talking about amds upcomming rx 500 series and how amds drivers are much better than geforce drivers. But is the geforce drivers much worse than the radeon drivers and will the 500 series be shit?

Thanks

500 series will be higher clocked 400 series. I wouldn't expect it to be at the same level like 1070 but it should be very close. Drivers are good on both sides. The question is: what resolution are you gaming on?

I mean 1070 is weak for 4k but okay for 1440p. I would not go under 1070 for 1440p so yeah 1070 is the way to go for you. The only thing is that 500 series may lower the price of 1070..

RX 570/580 are supposed to be rebrands of RX 470/480 so I would expect 15% performance improvement at most.

What you want to wait for is VEGA. However, I don't know if there will be VEGA that will be competing with GTX 1070 or if they will be shooting straight at the GTX 1080/1080ti.

Is the RX 480 good enough for 1440p? Yes, but not all games at Ultra. It is very capable at 1440p on High settings though.

They won't cut it for 4K, unless you don't mind medium settings. I'd wait until Vega or purchase a 1080 or above for 4K.

You will have far better luck with 1440p. Though don't expect 1070-class performance.

New Build (The Compromise): CPU - i7 9700K @ 5.1Ghz Mobo - ASRock Z390 Taichi | RAM - 16GB G.SKILL TridentZ RGB 3200CL14 @ 3466 14-14-14-30 1T | GPU - ASUS Strix GTX 1080 TI | Cooler - Corsair h100i Pro | SSDs - 500 GB 960 EVO + 500 GB 850 EVO + 1TB MX300 | Case - Coolermaster H500 | PSUEVGA 850 P2 | Monitor - LG 32GK850G-B 144hz 1440p | OSWindows 10 Pro.

Peripherals - Corsair K70 Lux RGB | Corsair Scimitar RGB | Audio-technica ATH M50X + Antlion Modmic 5 |

CPU/GPU history: Athlon 6000+/HD4850 > i7 2600k/GTX 580, R9 390, R9 Fury > i7 7700K/R9 Fury, 1080TI > Ryzen 1700/1080TI > i7 9700K/1080TI.

Other tech: Surface Pro 4 (i5/128GB), Lenovo Ideapad Y510P w/ Kali, OnePlus 6T (8G/128G), PS4 Slim.

But the release date of amd vega cards are unkown and amd releasing on time is kinda unrealistic and i'm not trying to wait half a year lol

The 550 is a cheap and weak gpu for csgo and lol gaming level.  No idea about the others though they might be better or close to 1070

What games are you talking about and are you only trying to play them at a nice cinematic framerate?

I talk about 60+ FPS in most games on High.

I play with GTX 1060 6GB at 1440p and I have 50 FPS in GTA V at ULTRA with Advanced options maxed out and 2x MSAA (NVIDIA Control Panel MSAA override to MFAA for better performance and same visual quality).

BF1 High preset 80FPS.

Witcher 3 mix of High/Ultra - 60FPS

Rise of the Tomb Raider mix of High/Ultra - 50FPS

RX 480 is similar in performance to GTX 1060 so I expect very similar FPS.

Theres also one more thing to consider here - A 1440P monitor with freesync is a lot cheaper than one with gsync and as you are looking at cards that wont max the refresh rate I think AMD may well be way to go for you here, whether that be 580 or Vega is upto you

Vega is coming in the first half of this year. Probably closer to the end of the first half. It will bring a 1070 competitor and potentially bring the 1070 down a bit also. Now the choise is yours you buy now or wait sometime its up to you.

The drivers thing is that the lattest drivers from nvidea are not as stable as they use to and they started to gather user data.

Amds drivers arent perfect either but they are pretty good, no stability problems thought.

And then theirs fine whine tech.

Do you use MFAA to override MSAA? That gets you quite a FPS boost in games that use MSAA.

Also most of the games I mentioned do benefit from extra threads so it is possible that it yields me few more FPS.

I never get these FPS if I run benchmark though... in game however, I get quite a bit better performance.

They're literally gonna be overclocked 480s and 470s, and the 1070 is still way ahead of them enough to the point where overclocking them won't make it up. While there are AMD's Vega GPUs coming, we still don't know enough about performance numbers and it most likely won't be here until Computex time. As well, at best they might perform about the same as the 1070 for $40 cheaper, so chances are your deal is worth it. Don't listen to your brother, while what he said is a little bit true, AMD's been working on having better launch drivers anyways which would mean less performance improvement over time which mutes his point somewhat. Considering Vega's not even out yet and most likely won't give a big boost in perf/$ just get a 1070, it's an excellent card.

I disagree, because of higher dpi, but it's really just a matter of opinion.
