Makerbot aims to put a 3D printer in every school, and needs your help

Youbetternot

Makerbot if you didn't know is a company in brooklyn which makes 3D printers. Makerbot plans to put 3D printers in every school, in my opinion my school don't need 3D printers, but it would be nice to have one.

What You Can Do

1. Get the word out. Tell the teachers you know to register at DonorsChoose.org.

2. Support a school. Contribute to the effort by choosing a teacher; help get them set for the Next Industrial Revolution.

3. Participate in the Thingiverse Challenge. Develop models that teachers can use to improve Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education.

MakerBot, the Brooklyn-based company that makes a variety of desktop 3D printers, accessories and associated software, announced a new plan today designed to put one of its signature devices into every school in America. Called the "MakerBot Academy," the new effort relies on DonorsChoose, a crowdfunding website designed specifically for budget-strapped teachers, which lets them post requests for specific supplies online and solicit donations to help pay for the costs.

Google and Reddit have previously turned to DonorsChoose for other educational tech initiatives. In this case, MakerBot is urging teachers to sign up for DonorsChoose and ask for pledges toward a MakerBot Replicator 2 3D printer, last year's model, along with a supply of the plastic used for printing and an equipment service plan. MakerBot is offering a slight discount for its education bundle: $2,352 dollars for the whole package compared to $2,700 for the the general retail price. The $348 discount is equivalent to about the cost of one year of the company's service plan, according to a MakerBot spokesperson.

This would be a really cool thing for my engineering class since we already do laser engraving and custom milling jobs.

Why would they even need a 3D printer? The only use I see is a model of some sort.

Yea, maybe for schools that are collage grade or maybe some high schools, but middle school and elementary school I don't see why you would need that

Why would some class like a history, or language class need a 3d printer? A regular printer I could see probably (report cards, grades, handouts), what good would a 3D printer do for them?

A High school where I live teaches 3D modelling techniques, so this would be useful.

For math models or even engineering. It's not like they will give like each class a 3D printer probably just 1 per school

This IS the United States.........why give them something that can be used to make a firearm? The need for a 3D is not needed.

There are 10 types of people in this world, those who understand binary, and those who don't.

Engineering, robotic, those sort of clases I could see the use, but a language, a history, a geography, art (at lest elemntary/middle?), Physical Education? . . . .

You posted the same thing twice with different wording.....also they never said for every classroom, but every school. Many schools in my area have TSA and engineering classes which would be a very nice things to have.

This would enable computer arts to flourish even more and help sciences applied and non applied to visualize better. With the right training teachers could have model's to hand out each class instead of trying to draw 3d shapes on overheads.

+1

my school

I know a lot of schools with CNC machines which are a lot more expensive to use and to buy, so them buying one of these is nothing to them.
