Sure it will work. At 1280x1024 most GPU's in the market will work with that too though.

GTX 1050TI is a upgraded version of the GTX 1050, so go with that if you would like.

the rx 470 seems like a bit overkill for that resolution idk why you would get one other than if you were planning on upgrading in the future

With that CPU and that res an RX470 will be wasted, get the regular 1050 or a RX460. If you plan to upgrade monitors soon, get a 1050Ti or RX470

The bottleneck will be the screen ;) The Pentium and 1050 (Ti) can do much better, but the screen won't be able to show it.

But in some CPU intensive games, the GPU will be held back. Partially thanks to the low res, but also due to the lower core amount

I'd say get the GTX1050 and buy a second hand i5.

If you need to save some money you can also look at second hand GPUs.

A dual core pentium will make it hard to reach 60fps and some games wont even launch with just 2 cores.

Laptop: Surface Pro 7 (i5, 16GB RAM, 256GB SSD)

2400, 2500 and 2500K CPU's are still somewhat common on the second hand market.
