AMD Ryzen R7 1800X performance review - TechPowerUp

One thing I think people are forgetting is, besides just performance reviews, AMD finally has a product which is absolutely competitive with intel for the first time since phenom X4 and X6, which might make intel bring cannonlake forward, and possibly make intel drop their prices on HEDT.

Intel i5-6600K@4.2GHz, 16GB Crucial DDR4-2133, Gigabyte Z170X-UD3, Be quiet shadow rock slim, Sapphire RX 480 Nitro+ OC, Fractal design Integra M 550W, NZXT S340, Sandisk X110 128GB, WD black 750GB, Seagate momentus 160GB, HGST 160GB

And this is what really matters. I do hope that Intel drops their prices. If they do, I will get a 6900K or a 5960X :D

I don't think they will.

I don't think that they will either, but if that happens, I will definitely get a 5960X or a 6900K!

But Ryzen needs high speed memory to be good at gaming....

But faster ram and overclocking motherboards are also more expensive, this way you will actually pay more for AMD's CPU, it's possible that Intel's i5 6/7400 will perform better in gaming even with slower ram and non OC chipsets.

I don't find that anywhere, nor I have heard of. Can you please qoute some reputable websites or Youtube video which claims and proves this ? I would like to learn about it

PCPER talks about it but I can't find the link.  I'll post it later if I have more time to look.  I know others have talked about it as well, I think Ars Technica?

Lol, I am on X99. It wouldn't make sense to not get an Intel CPU, if Intel lowers their prices.

- X99 when launched had issues with high speed DDR4 kits

- Asus X99 mobo vrms were having a bbq

- 5820K barely won against the i7 4790K (Launch)

You won't be able to OC the 1800X to 4GHz with that motherboard.... But you will be able to OC a 5820K (which is cheaper and OCs better) to 4.6GHz with the X99 UD3. The 5820K will be very similar in GPU accelerated productivity applications and it will destroy the 1800X in games. The choice between the 2 comes down to:

  • Raw performance
  • Price/performance

Why will one not be able to OC the 1800X to 4ghz on the Asrock B350? If the 1800X is a good chip, that isn't a problem.

Same for the 5820K so this is fair.

AFAIK, Ryzen needs a higher end motherboard to get a good overclock.....

I've seen users on ocn with 2nd tier X370 boards pushing high voltages.

I really like were Ryzen sits. I want more cores, was think of going X99 for my next system, and I play on a 1440p 21:9 monitor so the games I play are GPU bound anyway.

Same situation here. Really happy with my purchase and it shines when gaming at 1440p while running a bunch of programs in the background, which is perfect for me.

Same here mate! If I didn't get my X99 system when it launched I'd jump at Ryzen now; but as it stands it makes more sense to pick up one of those CPUs.

Oh... Going from 2133 to 2666 doesn't seem to make a huge difference though.. This makes me think that higher speed DDR4 won't improve performance by more than 1-2%....

On a side note, I hope that Pinnacle Ridge will be a "simple" 8 core die...

Going from 2666Mhz to 3200Mhz is a big gain at 1080p. 2133- 2666Mhz not so much. Although it does depend on the game; as usual.

After being through this thread, I watched this review again, and it makes all sense now. Also it settles almost every question in here.

Lel, 4K benchmarks. They don't show CPU performance because at 4K, you have a GPU bottleneck...

One thing I can't get over is the amazing Minimums Ryzen has over the 7700K in GTA V.

What's going on there.

Also it's average fps. While AVG FPS can be 80-90, min FPS can be lower.

It is interesting to note that the AMD reviews I have seen with min frame rates has AMD in the lead even against a 7700k in many cases.

I completely agree with that, but it worked quite a well for CS:GO, unless you have 400Hz monitor, you'd still see 7700k better in that. Also it was said in the review, for complete gaming 7700k is better

Actually, many CS:GO players want 400FPS even though they have a 144/240Hz monitor

Idk... Those minimums may have been rare I guess... I find interesting the fact that with the 1080 Ti, the 7700K has 10 more FPS on average at 4K!

In very high level play it actually makes sense. IF you can push 400 then even a huge dip where framerates get cut in half still have you pushing over your monitors max so you get a very very consistent experience.
