I generally try to stay away from fandoms, like FNAF, MLP, and Undertale. I have never played those games or watched the shows because the fandoms have ruined any interest I may have had in them. I generally do not participate in the fandoms of games I do play or shows/movies I do watch, and I plan to keep it that way, and the only 'fandom' I am somewhat subscribed to is furry fandom as a general hobby. Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Need for Speed...these are all just games to me and I play them/mod them as such. I don't watch TV very often and when I do it's a car show like Top Gear or something similar, I don't really watch cartoons unless they are really good like Bojack Horseman.

Plenty of fandoms have superbly negative reputations or stigmas/stereotypes, like MLP or even Minecraft. Every fandom generally has its 'eccentric' characteristics that drive more people away (Minecraft, for example has a reputation for screaming little kids, similar to CoD). I will not speak about MLP because of my strong negative opinions towards it.

Anyway, I found something that some people may have heard about called SCP, and I investigated a little. I am being cautious, however because while the community seems pretty legit, every fandom has its eccentricities, but the fact that I couldn't find any red flags about the SCP community is producing the cautiousness I am using. I don't want to subscribe to the SCP fandom to find out there's some incredibly uncool or socially taboo aspect I wasn't aware of. The community, as far as I am aware, is based around horror writing or spook writing, and I enjoy writing in my spare time and most of my writing is pretty dark to begin with.

Furry fandom has its eccentricities but is so broad it's hard to point a fault at them. FNAF is...out of control (I don't even)...Minecraft is everywhere (I play, but with my little cousin because she enjoys it and has nobody else to play with), MLP is [redacted], and Undertale is just...no...

Does anyone else understand where I'm coming from?

tl;dr - I found a fandom that I believe I may enjoy but am being cautious due to previous experiences and pre-existing stigmas before considering joining and need some moral guidance and insight

They aren't inherently bad, but the most rabid fans are the loudest of those communities so to others they seem bad. When you're on the 'inside' of a fandom, it's not half bad (if you can ignore the couple rabid fans)

Just do whatever. You know you are taking it too far when people start calling you a faggot for being obnoxious.

I had fun being a horsefucker.

So did I (seriously did some kinky shit with horses), but the stigma and names hurt. It's one thing to be a part of a fandom or cult, but another thing entirely to be chastised and razed for doing things that make you happy.

I'm sort of in the same boat as the OP, though I don't know if I'd limit to just "fandom." Personally, anything that attains increased adoration and discussion on crazy levels, I tend to avoid.

For instance, I've never seen Star Wars, LotR (was dragged to the third movie but fell asleep), I don't watch The Walking Dead or Game of Thrones, stuff like that. I'm not sure there's a threshold or anything, but I guess the more something is discussed or spoken highly of, the more I lose interest in it.

Obviously, there are plenty of popular things I've enjoyed, whether movie, show, game, or anime, but again, the level at which it's adored/discussed is essentially less. Maybe that makes me a bit pretentious, but it's just a deep feeling I have in relation to some of these things.

I like Undertale so far, I just haven't gotten around to completing it.

Minecraft is a classic too. I love it.

It's best not to judge games solely on the community. You will miss out on some really good experiences if you do IMO.

I enjoy those games (although I don't play them much anymore) and I agree, games should be judged by gameplay, not community.

As for other fandoms like MLP and such, I'll keep quiet on that because if I say anything negative, people are bound to get mad at me.
