Do i really need an optica drive ??

Supreme-frost

Ok so I'm kinda new to PC building, as well as my PC being able to run games, I would also like to be able to watch movies on it. Do I need an optical drive to do this?? so as to play DVDS and Blue rays or will I be fine just downloading/ streaming online. are there any other uses of optical drives I should be aware of?? I'm asking because I've seen some pretty sweet cases online, however,  some of them, don't have optical drive bays. Sorry if this questions kinda lame :P.

Nope. You dont. getting an external one, as @Mug suggested, is a good idea incase of a rare scenario appers and you happend to need it. but you also have to know that theres a big chance of never using it, just so you know.

Indeed, if you have an optical unit form other system, you can buy a case so you transform it in an external device.

I haven't ever really needed one in my current rig, everything you need nowadays is on the internet anyways and windows 10 finally supports .iso natively, no need for daemon tools and such any more. Occasionally I still burn a music cd for my dad's car but then I just use my old laptop's optical drive.

I personally don't need one since most things I use don't require a CD or DVD to be installed (also my case doesn't support 5.25" bays LOL) but optical drives can be useful if you still do things like rip music CDs or if you want to watch DVDs or Bluerays (should your drive support BR playback) in your collection without having to purchase and download them again or whatever.

But as mentioned there are external USB options if you don't want to be stuck and want to go that route. :)

If you plan to watch BD movies, getting actual BD player might be cheaper. They are around €100 mark at cheapest here which is just €30 over the internal drives price.

I bought a BluRay burner, i think I've used it once in the more than two years I've had it, and it was to make an ISO I've never used. Oh well

Can also depend on your internet speed. In Australia, i get 190kb/s, so installing games from a disc is pretty much a must.
