Just going through some old junk at a used server store and found this CPU available:

http://ark.intel.com/products/67024/Intel-Xeon-Processor-E5-2448L-20M-1_8-GHz-8_0-GTs-Intel-QPI

I can't seem to find any reviews on it and I know it's a low clock speed server CPU but does it seem any good?

Thanks

Pretty bad, what are you using it for. The boards will be 200+ though.

A pentium will be much faster for desktop tasks.

There's the option to buy it in a dual CPU configuration on a server ATX motherboard, even with the dual CPU configuration, would it still seem bad?

A sinlge i7 will be faster in most uses cases and cheaper, and lower power.

Was going to try to just build a "just for fun" workstation for daily usage / occasional video editing. I think though as you say a more recent i7 would be better.

Thanks

yea a core i5 will smoke those chips in video editing. Id stay away from those.

A dual CPU server, 16 cores 32 threads at 2.1gHz?

That will preform better at video rendering and media encoding than any non- extreme i7. The 6900k+ WILL beat it but if you can pickup the whole xeon system for like $1500(CAD) thats a no brainer.

Wait hang on, so if I can pick up both CPUs and the motherboard for $500 CAD, and fit it with a decent graphics card. Would you say I would have a decent machine?

Thanks

if what you are using it for cant be easely divided up over 16 threads then this CPU is garbage and you would be better of with an I5 2500K

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

For something like a server it is great as long as you dont mind the power consumption but for anything like gaming or editing the low clock speed will really hurt its performance and you would be lucky if it beat a new i3, well that and the motherboards for it are expensive, rare, and as linus showed on his cheap 8 core video you might not be able to even add expansion cards

This exactly. Dont rely on it for gaming

So it wouldn't be like any good for Premiere Pro would it?

https://forums.adobe.com/thread/1901069

Heres a good forum explaining clock speed vs cores for premier.

Personally i would jump on those CPU's and mobo. If you are editing at 4k, you probably want a decent SSD to work with aswell.
