In this video and many others it is mentioned games rarely use more than 4 cores so why on earth is a 8 core sixteen thread CPU getting everyone so excited I don't quite understand is it because the cores are clock at lower speeds so more of them are used I'm game or are these more aimed at streamers because at the moment I'm trying to decide between kaby lake or Ryzen and as I am mostly just a gamer will Ryzen even offer me many benefits over a i7 7700k?

Its because Ryzen is AMDs big come back and their philosophy(if you look at the past for them) is that they like more CPU cores...also Ryzen can beat CPU's that are twice the cost of it

Because, for one, it brings competition and forces intel to lower prices to compete.

Two, yes, STRICTLY for gaming, 4 cores is all thats used in most titles.

But people who want to stream games, or run more then one game at once, or do pretty much anything other then gaming at once, benefit quite alot from more cores.

Atm my build has a 4c/8t 6700K clocked at 4.6GHZ. I drop 20% of my frames when I stream league in OBS. If I had another 2 cores and 4 threads, that would likely be 0.

Besides, the 1700X and 1800X Ryzen CPUs still perform well in games.

TL;DR : If your doing ANYTHING as well as gaming, you benefit from the cores.

People use computers for things besides gaming. But the gamers are following this news closely because the 4 core Ryzens are not out yet and the benchmarks results of the 8 core CPUs will be indicative of the 4 core CPU performance, especially if, as you say, games don't take advantage of more than 4 cores, so testing the 8 core CPU should just give us the performance that the 4 core version will have yeah? And if the 8 core results are actually better than 4 core results, well... all the better.

I get that an I suppose they are cheaper but will 16 threads actually help in game?

If you just game then no. If you game and stream it and also do some random god knows what all at the same time, then yes, the extra core / thread will help.

It's because before everyone could afford it, 8 cores supposedly sucked for gaming.  Then AMD introduced an affordable 8 core and now everyone's singing a completely different tune overnight.

We went from a community that wouldn't shut up about the 6700k to "8 cores rules!!" overnight.  It's actually funny watching it happen.

On a serious note though, I'd expect more overall flexibility out of an 8 core Ryzen, but the 6700k/7700k will remain the chip to have for gaming purposes.

Also, i'd go Ryzen if your building rn. Cheaper motherboards, and even if the 7700K IS faster for most games, I think you'll like having an 8c/16t. What if you decide you want to stream, or render some 3d works, or do anything else?

More people will start building games to work with more cores, AMD said they want 8core CPUs to be the norm. It's not as if an 8 core CPU is bad for gaming, look at all the personal rigs of the tech youtubers, none of them use 4c/8t.

I'd go ryzen. I don't do much else other then gaming and i'm getting rid of my 6700K and 1070 for an 1800X / Vega GPU. You'll enjoy having an insane amount of threads to work with.

okay I kinda see were this is going but it is still taking a risk what if Ryzen isn't what it is chalked up to be and flops game developers wouldn't care and it would be a waste. so I probably will see reviews and benchmarks before I make my decision.

okay thank you I do relies that computers are not just for gaming I'm just saying for my use case what's the point? but I do see that for the same money I could get a 1800x instead of a 7700k.

No point really, but there will be lesser CPUs being released, and this gives us some indication of how the 4 core and 6 core parts will perform, so people are excited in anticipation of those.

It matters because Intel wouldn't bring anything more than 4 cores to the consumer side of the fence.  If you wanted more than 4 cores, you have to shell out extra for LGA2011 + Quad channel memory. The issue with 4 cores is that when I want to watch a video alongside a game(I have a dual monitor setup), the game would have more slowdowns and even have dropped frames.

Solid decision.  Don't buy anything that you're unsure about.  3rd party reviews will help clear up all of the rumors.

okay fair enough I just didn't want to buy a more expensive CPU just because it had a lot of cores and it turn out for them to be useless I also just wanted to know if it is actually useful in general or just for marketing and getting the CPUs sold.

To be honest, nothing you listed requires 8 cores even when run simultaneously unless your background task is something like encoding H.265.

it wont need 8 cores. 6 cores would be fine but there isnt a 6 core cpu that is also good at gaming

It's very good that AMD has come out swinging in the CPU market again, as it does force competition.  Here's the thing though..........

Do you NEED to get Ryzen now?  That all depends on your personal preference and what you have now.

If you already have a 6700K, 7700K, 6800K, 6900K, then you may not really "need" to upgrade to Ryzen yet.

if you don't have any of these and are wanting to do more than just gaming - you want to do video editing, rendering, and other stuff - then by all means, snap these bad boys up and have fun, as the price is absolutely spot on.

I would just say don't let the shiny Ryzen spotlight blind you to what you already have in front of you, and then judge based on your needs and wants.  But heck, if you have the extra money and want to go for it anyway, you should be fine, but if you're doing just gaming, it doesn't look like they'll beat Kaby Lake blow for blow - but I may be wrong.  We'll just have to wait for the independent review to come out and see what it looks like.
