Some advice on a build

Hey guys!

So, long story short, the wife JUST gave me the green light to build a new PC. I'm upgrading from a build I put together in 2009 with an i5-750 (my current build is in my profile if you're interested). I will be using this as a gaming machine mostly, with light office work and benchmarks and such. The build I put together is severely overkill for those purposes, but what can I say, I'm an enthusiast. Anyways, this is it.

I'm not spending any more money on video cards at the moment. I'm running 2 GTX980's in SLI and will just recycle those. They definitely meet my needs for the moment. And I'll be using the monitor's I have. I don't think I'm missing anything. I'm not sold on the RAM or anything really. I'm waffling on the build because I wouldn't mind having a Kaby Lake but the 7700k only has 16 PCIe lanes and I'm running an SLI and a M.2 which will occupy 4 lanes on its own. I'll probably wait to see what the AMD release does to the market before I buy anything. At the end of the day, unless they are considerably cheaper, I'm probably going to go with an Intel build anyways. I picked the Mobo becuse I like ASUS motherboards. I wanted a build with some RGB lighting(cause that's the new thing now), and everything else on the build is just an extension of research I've done.

I'm mostly putting this out here because I want some opinions. What would you guys change? Thanks in advance!

i would change out the power supply. you dont need a 1000w i would go with a 650w or 750w.  i would also get another hard drive.  other wise nice build. great choice of motherboard ive only heard good things about that one

Current Rig=  AMD Ryzen 9 5900x, Asus Crosshair Hero VIII, EVGA RTX 3070 FTW3 ultra, 32gb Corsair Vengence Pro RGB 3000hz White, EVGA 750 P2 PSU, 1TB Samsung 980 Pro, 500gb samsung 860 evo, 250GB Samsung 850 evo, 2TB Samsung 970 Evo Plus, 2TB seagate firecuda sshd,  LianLi PC 011 Dynamic XL ROG edition, Corsair h150i elite capelix

Thanks man! The PSU was just a split second decision with little thought lol. You're right, I need something for my steam library lol.

For just gaming youre better off getting a 7700k.

Yea I wondered that too. I know its really no big deal to have your SLI running at 8x/8x, not sure about 8x/4x. Guess I could just toss the NVMe and settle on a higher storage SSD. But then I'm compromising lol.

It will be fine. The performance degredation you will see is MINIMAL at best. go with the 7700k and the dual 980's

4x3.0 is more than enough for any modern GPU. benchmarks show there isn't any real performance difference but I'm not sure if sli would be different.

Thanks for the input guys! I'm not 100% sold on the 7700k yet. That option is definitely cheaper. I can get a CPU and a good board for less than the cost of that 6850k. I'll need to do some more research. You all have given me a lot to think about.

Was wrong about price of the 7700k.

Definitely looks like a nice build. While a lot of people will say wait for Ryzen, I'd look into it's PCIe lane set up. I don't think they have as many as Intel, and that's one of the reasons they're cheaper. So if that's important to you, stick with them.

If you do end up looking at 7700ks see if you can find one that someone bought with their Retail Edge program. They're often quite cheap and that's how I pick up my CPU every upgrade cycle.

With SLI on older cards, and a 140w CPU? Yeah, you'll want closer to 850w. 750w would do, but I'd want the 850w just to feel a little safer.

I don't think you'd really be compromising that much. The gains from NVMe aren't really that great, it's just a slight edge here and there unless you're doing a lot of large file transfers. Load times are ever so slightly increased, but for the size to cost differential...I'd rather have more capacity and wait a few more seconds for the odd thing to load.

Interestingly enough running it in 16x/4x sees a pretty nice reduction in card temps.

Thanks man! I really appreciate the input. I really wanted to hold onto that NVMe, but you're right. At least I'll have that M.2 slot to upgrade into in the future when maybe it's worth it lol. Really appreciate the reply!

Aye, there are some decent prices but they'll only go lower. I'd still get an m.2 SATA drive, saves the cabling needed for a regular SSD so it'll look a lot cleaner.
