Have you updated Camera Raw for CS6 recently? Don't tell me you have a pirated copy...

Edit: What camera are you using?

Adobe limits the version of Camera RAW you can update to, so newer cameras wont be supported in older versions. You can convert the CR2 to DNG first then it will be openable. Otherwise, you can convert in another program like Canon's own before using PS for finishing touches if needed.

Gaming system: R7 7800X3D, Asus ROG Strix B650E-F Gaming Wifi, Thermalright Phantom Spirit 120 SE ARGB, Corsair Vengeance 2x 32GB 6000C30, RTX 4070, MSI MPG A850G, Fractal Design North, Samsung 990 Pro 2TB, Acer Predator XB241YU 24" 1440p 144Hz G-Sync + HP LP2475w 24" 1200p 60Hz wide gamut
Productivity system: i9-7980XE, Asus X299 TUF mark 2, Noctua D15, 64GB ram (mixed), RTX 3070, NZXT E850, GameMax Abyss, Samsung 980 Pro 2TB, random 1080p + 720p displays.
Gaming laptop: Lenovo Legion 5, 5800H, RTX 3070, Kingston DDR4 3200C22 2x16GB 2Rx8, Kingston Fury Renegade 1TB + Crucial P1 1TB SSD, 165 Hz IPS 1080p G-Sync Compatible

You should be able to open it, I have no issues opening CR2s from eos 50d on CS6.

Try using lightroom, does it still not open? There should also be a way to convert the images to dng using lightroom.

Adobe provide a converter. I think they also do this in part to try and make people use DNG more.

As JohnT asked, what camera is in use?

50D is ancient so probably supported. Raw converter has to be new enough to support the camera, and after a point, they stopped making it compatible with CS6.

So on that note, the latest version of Adobe Camera RAW for CS6 is 9.1.1 released around mid-2015.

There's a list of supported cameras and their required versions at link above. If the required version for the camera is greater than 9.1.1 then alternatives need to be uses. Otherwise, updating to 9.1.1 will update support.

According to the above list that needs ACR 9.5, but you can only go up to 9.1.1 on CS6. So you'll have to look elsewhere.
