Upcoming System Build Guide - Help us choose the best hardware!

LinusTech

Why is no one recommending an SSHD? I have found that an ssd + hdd build is just too difficult for the majority of users. Not only that, one sshd is less expensive than ssd + hdd.

This is an intro build for pc dummies switching from the "it just works" consoles to the superior platform that, let's be honest here, is much more complicated than consoles.

Cost really, I think. SSHDs are still too expensive. Like I was looking up prices this morning and a 120GB SSD is like $80 and a 2TB HDD around $80 as well. The SSHD is like $140, or something like that, which is almost the same as a 120GB SSD + a 2TB HDD.

In theory, they're a good idea for laptops, because you only have one HDD bay and you can only either choose speed (an SSD) or lots of storage (a HDD). With desktops though, that limitation doesn't really exist, so it doesn't make much sense to use an SSHD in one.

My Personal Rig - AMD 3970X | ASUS sTRX4-Pro | RTX 2080 Super | 64GB Corsair Vengeance Pro RGB DDR4 | CoolerMaster H500P Mesh

My Wife's Rig - AMD 3900X | MSI B450I Gaming | 5500 XT 4GB | 32GB Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4-3200 | Silverstone SG13 White

It seems like you have already chosen the processor and MB.

Case: For the case you could go with Cooler Master N200 or for a little bit more money, NZXT tempest 410(exceptional case for the money). Also Linus reviewed this case a while ago and realy liked it and its Atx instead of M-Atx so it provides much more compatibility for future.

Memory: As this is an apu build, go with some 2400mhz 8GB kit.

Power Supply: Corsair CX 430

Storage: 1Tb WD green and 60GB ssd for boot

Corsair Carbide 200R

120GB Kinston V300 or Seagate Barracuda/WD Blue 1TB (surprisingly close in price, in US anyway)

SeaSonic S12II 520

G.Skill 2x4GB Sniper DDR3 1600 or whatever... RAM is all pretty much the same

actually on an apu system, the better ram the better. the apu loves that fast ram.

First of all, this should be called "The Console Killer" :D and here are my part picks:

This build (including Windows) is around the $850 pc sweet spot.

This build includes:

CPU: AMD A10-6800K 4.1GHz Quad-Core Processor (Great APU, Required for this build)

MOBO:Asus F2A55-M/CSM Micro ATX FM2 Motherboard (has all the needed features, USB 3.0, has stability awards and EPU. )

CPU Cooler:Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler (Will allow some overclocking and keep things cool.  It will also not break the bank)

Memory:A-Data XPG V2 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-2400 Memory (to give the APU some crazy speed, as APUs need high speed RAM to go super fast and have good fps)

SSD:Samsung 840 Series 120GB 2.5" Solid State Disk (super fast storage to provide a snappy and fluid experience for not a massive cost)

HDD:Seagate Barracuda 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive (Great for storing Games, Photos Movies and with the case, you can upgrade whenever you want)

CASE:Cooler Master Storm Enforcer ATX Mid Tower Case (Great case for the money, I use it. Looks great. great quality.  Matches the rig and leaves lots of upgrade room)

PSU:Silverstone Strider Plus 600W 80 PLUS Bronze Certified ATX12V / EPS12V Power Supply (Silverstone is awesome and 80+ broze and 600w will allow lots of upgrades which you really want in a gaming pc)

DVDRW:Asus DRW-24B1ST/BLK/B/AS DVD/CD Writer (Why not?)

OS:Microsoft Windows 8.1 - OEM (64-bit) (to ensure the highest FPS and applications to date)

Hope you enjoy :) Total Cost: Approximately $815 with Windows 8.1 License.   Approximately $700 without Windows 8.1 and DVD RW

if you're gonna pay that much, just get an fx cpu and dedicated gpu.

I too say N200,  Built several computers in them, they're awesome for the price. (£32 in UK)

It has a bottom mounted psu with a nice dust filter setup, too.

Here's my 2 pennies worth

AMD A-10 6800K £109.99

*I know it isn't mATX but it's worth considering* Gigabyte G1 Sniper A88X FM2+ (loads of features, upgradeable in the future to Kaveri) £89.99

Kingston Hyper X Beast 8GB 2133MHz £71.99

Kingston 120GB SSDNow V300 (enough to get you started, you can add more storage when you can afford it or use an old drive) £67.99

Corsair Hydro H55 £52.99

Bitfenix Outlaw Gaming Case (I like the white and red version) £44.99

Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound £8.99

Corsair CX430 80+ power supply (plenty extra to add a Radeon 7770, extra drives, etc, in the future) £43.99

Total cost in GBP £490.92. A great budget PC with lots of upgradeability.

These are U.K prices sourced from www.overclockers.co.uk   You might be able to acquire the items cheaper elsewhere especially in the U.S

Maybe the fractal core 1000 if it's budget oriented, is a great case mind, with room for a gpu later.

faster ram for moar gigahertz and for the APU.... core 1000 or prodigy m. 450w psu. save as much money. kill all dem consoles. HDD if SSDs won't fit in the budget because even that 7200rpm seagate barracuda beat those consoles at loading times.
