RX 470/480 Few questions

Mex1507

Hi there, LTT community!
I already asked a question shortly before christmas I guess if I should get a new AMD card or a used GTX 970. Now the fan of the 970 is broken and i sent the card to mindfactory. But they do not have any GTX 970 left, so i have to buy a new one. I am aiming for a RX 470 or 480 but im still unsure if 4 gigs or 8. So first question is: Which one would you get? RX 470 4gig (195-212€), 8gig (240€), 480 (220-250€) or the 8gig one (260€ - 290€)? Pretty tough decision, I guess. Sure, 8 gigs are more "futureproof" but with a RX 470 you don't really wanna futureproof your system I think. RX 480 with 8 would make more sense at that point, right?
And 2nd question: Is a 6 pin enough for a descent overclock? Because I would like to oc a little bit. Yeah, 5 fps. Who cares? I know, but it's fun and I definitely wanna try.
And last question: Which custom card would you recommend? I am aiming at a Sapphire Nitro+ for the 470Xs (4 or 8gig) at the moment, I heared that XFX is also very good this year. I just want a descent cooler which is capable of OCing. I want a nice balance between price, cooling , performance and noise. (Especially noise. My Powercolor 270x was terrible *_* loud fans + insane coil whining, bad sample I guess. Thanks in advance! And im not a native speaker, so please be nice :D

The XFX GTR and ASUS Strix are the best RX 480's from VRM points, they both have room for serious volt mods, and have very good VRMs and coolers, MSI, Sapphire and the rest are also very good options. I'd say look for one with an 8 pin or dual 6 pin as a single 6 pin is enough, but can add a little bottle neck due to the safety and conservatism they added to the PCI-e standard. I'd say the 8Gb model just because 8GB, but you're not likely to need it all, you won't notice too much but you'll notice too little however.

If you wanna overclock and stay quite buy a GTX 1070 and water cool it, because even the best air cooler when you start adding voltage for overclocks need shit tons of air.

Yours faithfully

I shall agree with AniJan, I recently got my hands on a Asus Strix ROG Rx480 OC 8 gig, and I am personally very happy with the card.

I should mention that i am going for 1080p only by the way. And what do you guys think of the XFX RS Black Edition's cooling performance?

Hi,

I have the RX480 8GB NITRO+ and am very happy with it's performance, both FPS and noise level. I'd get a 480, especially if you'd like to go higher resolution or faster monitor (120Hz for example). I get about 45 - 55 FPS in Witcher 3 on 3440x1440p ultrawide with maxed settings.

However, don't expect to overclock the RX480. It gets unstable, even if it has a better power delivery system.

No, it doesn't get unstable.

Well I couldn't get a significant overclock out of it. May be my card, but when I asked people who bought them before me they couldn't get anything more out of their cards either.

Would you care to elaborate? What speed does your card run at and what are your settings?

That means you're either overclocking wrong (not enough power limit or voltage) or you lost the silicon lottery. I leave mine at 1400, but it can do 1440. The only thing limiting me is the fact that my case is small and one of my GPU fans doesn't get enough air.

The power limit is set to maximum, haven't really fiddled with the voltage, what is your voltage settings?

It's going to vary for everyone. You are safe up to 1.3v which is even less than the max allowed by afterburner, so you'll be fine.
