Undecided between B&W P7, Momentum 2.0, HD598/599

Zaneboy

Hey all,

I'm looking to purchase a new set of headphones. I've already got a small list of headphones I've been doing research on. Currently looking at the B&W P7, Sennheiser Momentum 2.0 & Sennheiser HD598 / 599.

Home use only. they'll be used for music (genres including but not limited to rock, pop, edm, alternative), movies and potentially gaming. So you can say I'm looking at a versatile pair of headphones.

Will be used in combination with a Graham Slee USB Bitzie amp/dac.

Do any of you have experiences with two of these headphones as to give a comparison? Suggestions or general input/feedback is also very welcome.

Thnx in advance :)

If it's just for home use only, I would go for the Sennheiser HD598s. Take a look at the Audio Technica M50Xs though. They're quite good. Have you researched what open back and closed back headphones are yet? That's really important to search up if you haven't.

The HD 598 feel really light, and I can wear them all day if I wanted to. The sound signature isn't my cup of tea, but the sound stage and position is incredible. Super wide and airy (is that even a term?). The high and mid are decent. Sometimes, I find the treble to be fatiguing. The bass is lacking. Some would say it's adequate, but I like my bass. Sound quality is great.

I have already done that. ;)

I'll take a look at the M50Xs as well. Thank you to both of you for the input so far.

I find the HD598 to be lacking in the bass for your preferred type of music genre. For gaming they are great because of the nice sound stage, and great treble. Might want to take a look at the HD558 for a little more bass.

The Momentum 2.0 have really, really nice highs imo. Has a good amount of bass as well. Soundstage is decent. These have the benefit of looking fashionably nice.

Some others have mentioned the M50x. Both the M40x and M50x have nice bass. They both sound different, so it might be best to try them out yourself and take everyone's opinion with a grain of salt (about which one is better). These have next to no sound stage.

Another headphone you might want to look into is the DT770(80 or 250 Ohm)/DT880 and Custom One Pro Plus. All very similar, decent sound stage, and nice bass. DT770 is closed back with non-removable cable. I'm not a fan of the pressure it applies to my head. DT880 is a semi-open pair of headphones with non-removable cable. COP+ is closed back with removable cable and adjustable bass, but everything else is slightly (very slightly) lower quality than the DT770.

do not get the shitty m50x, they are overpriced.

All the headphones you have found sound fairly different and the price tag is also different.

Before you buy amp and dac.  My thoughts on the M50x  Ultimate Ears Reference monitor review I might have a thing for audio...

My main Headphones and IEMs:  K612 pro, HD 25 and Ultimate Ears Reference Monitor, HD 580 with HD 600 grills

DAC and AMP: RME ADI 2 DAC

Speakers: Genelec 8040, System Audio SA205

Receiver: Denon AVR-1612

Desktop: R7 1700, GTX 1080  RX 580 8GB and other stuff

Laptop: ThinkPad P50: i7 6820HQ, M2000M. ThinkPad T420s: i7 2640M, NVS 4200M

Feel free to pm me if you have a question for me or quote me. If you want to hear what I have to say about something just tag me.

Someone I know also suggested these so I'll take a look at them as well.

I know, I basically set a price limit and went from there. I'm not a specialist so I primarily went with the positive reviews given on certain cans.

The most difficult part about purchasing a new one is that there aren't many hifi stores in my neighborhood who have suggested cans in stock. Even if they do there's no guarantee I'll be able to test them out. Recently a friend of mine went to a B&W shop and asked to test a set of monitors he was interested in, they looked surprised and had to ask permission from higher up. Unfortunately in this digital age consumers are forced to go by reviews and online info rather than being able to get some hands-on (or ears-on :D) experience.

So far I haven't tested anything yet, trying to find (a) store(s) which allows me to do so. I currently own a Sennheiser PC350 & Beats Solo. The only thing I learned out of those is that I'd like to have a bit of bass present since I use the beats to watch movies cause the PC350 sound like tin cans in comparison.

Regarding budget I've set my limit at €350.

For what it's worth, the HD 558 is comparable to the 598 but with a warmer sound that's better for rock music.

I wanna suggest the Philips Fidelio X2s. They're around 200 euros. It's worth a shot.
